awful depressing book- I was not expecting this from the Where the Heart is and Honk and Holler author. So sad and graphic.

A LONG time ago, I read Lett's Where the Heart Is and Honk and Holler Opening Soon. I loved them. I think my mom passed them on to me. Well last week, a friend and I went to Borders to browse and I saw this one on the shelf. I wrote it down and came back and put it on hold at the library. It came in very soon and I devoured it! It's one of those tear-jerkers. It was equally horrifying and heartwarming. I definitely recommend this one.

I was dissappointed! I enjoyed "Where the Heart Is" and thought I would give Billie Letts another try. This book does not compare. The circus theme was a stretch for me.

Not what I expected-much darker. But I enjoyed it.

Heartwrenching as well as heartwarming. I love the development of the relationship between brother and sister.

Wow, I hated this book. At several points, I had to re-read entire chapters, convinced that I had inadvertently skipped an important scene that would have made the improbable plot twists make sense. How, where, and when did 15-year-old runaway Lutie get the information about her father’s final whereabouts? That scene never appears in the book, although a chapter ends with Lutie’s dramatic announcement to her brother, Fate. Why does Juan, the mysterious stranger who helps Lutie and Fate, speak ridiculously broken English? His sister – who, like Juan, returned to her father in the United States after living with her mother in Mexico – speaks flawlessly. And why is Fate so relieved that his friend Johnny hasn’t recognized Lutie’s photo when Lutie doesn’t even arrive at Johnny’s house until several paragraphs after Fate claims the meeting went without incident? Although the characters were well drawn – especially Lutie and Fate – I had to force myself to finish this sloppy mess, hoping it would redeem itself at some point. That point never came.

Pretty good book, but not as good as Billie Letts other novels.

Could be disturbing in parts and had what I felt was a quick ending. I did like it which is rare because I usually dont like a book if I dont like the main character and she is definatly not easy to like. I like Billie Letts writing and find it easy to envision her setting, people.
