Twain the serious writer comes out in these short pieces.

This is a great book. One of Mark Twain's best. I was never a fan of Huckleberry Finn, or the hick Tom Sawyer. I reall detested those books in school. This is a must read for anyone who thinks in 'differant' ways.

This was a delightful book. I have not yet read anything by Twain, and I thought this was so good, I'll have to check out other books by him. His writing is to the point, and he is very tongue in cheek. I enjoyed it very much.

I dont normally bother with reviews, comments are much more my style... but it seems that he action, what there is of it is in the review column. I would just like to point out, not only was Twain right 130 years ago, and not only was it impposible for a man of his position to publish such logicla and observavble truth it would still be unacceptable for a much loved literary hero to publish such rash words today, in 2008. i am thinking of JKRowling and Stephen King, and neither of them compare with Twain in either skill nor comtempory glory. sadlly he must have been two centuries ahead of his time, maybe the next pass of Hally's comet in 2060 will find us in a more logical world, i doubt i will be here, and i doubt the world will be greatly changed, but here's to hoping! i raise my volume of posthumously published truth high:)

Letters from the Earth is an assortment of unpublished-for-60-years writings by Mark Twain. They cover a wide span of subject matter ranging from critiques of the prose style of another writer to the author's construction of the Old Testament and God from the perspective of Satan. In addition to Letters from the Earth, the contents include Papers of the Adam Family, The Damned Human Race, Something About Repentance, Was the World Made For Man, In the Animal's Court, The Intelligence of God, The Lowest Animal and others.

I was totally taken aback. His opinions on religion and the hypocrosy of it all were almost exactly as mine as I read along. I thought that no one was like that... let alone back then... but indeed he was. To know that such a great man felt the same way as I did regarding human behavior brings me great comfort. I've read, reread, and revered it, as I think of this particular book as a treasure box full of letters from a brilliant, irritable but loving uncle each of us should have known sometime in our lives.

Twain is pissed at the world and he's not taking any excuses! No one is left out of his criticism of the modern world and human behavior, which makes for lots of laughs and some embarassment. This book should be read over a long period of time, lest it makes one too pessimistic and persnickety. His wit shines through and this a great book but do not read it when you are feeling down.

Twain was ahead of his time, ahead of our time with this book. It's a riot. I supposedly own a fruit press Twain once owned. At least that's what the guy at the church auction told me and I have no reason to disbelieve him. I am very proud of it and tell people "This fruit press was owned by Samuel Clemmens. That's Mark Twain to you and me".

A supurb example of satire at its best. A must for Twain fans.
