I LOVED this book! The contrast in the characters will astonish you - and their individual lives and stories are both complex and gripping. I liked how Frey also wove historical and interesting facts about LA in between the story lines. You truly got a sense for the city both past and present. He is an amazing author and won me over again. Keep writing please, Mr. Frey!

Great slice of life book set in L.A. Intermixed with California History. Very interesting writing style and some unique characters.

Loved this book - so many characters with only a few with stories unfolding - whilst you get a history of LA.
Felt random at first but really enjoyed the different format
    Great read

Anyone who lives in LA should read this book cause it tells more of the history of the city as well as the people who live in it right now.

It's also a recommandation to all the people who visit or will visit LA or still believe the fairy tales spinned by the movies and tv.

James Frey uses nonfiction to lay out the history of la and fiction to tell more about the heart and soul of its inhabitants. Be it an actor, a couple from the mid west or a latin American girl.

There were too many disjointed stories, but there were a few lovely ones. Not sure how I felt really.

I loved this book. A lot of the interwoven story lines would have been interesting as the entire book. I love his writing. And think he got a bum wrap about a million little pieces or whatever it was called. But that's another story.

I am not surprised that this book was well-written. I have to expect that everything that James Frey writes is great. I love his prose.

Brittle - hard - mean/violent short vignettes loosely tied together. Little slivers of hope - woven throughout - make me hold my breath - and with anxiety - continue.
