Pretty strong really. I hate to say it but I like James Frey, if I said I like Dave Matthews Band...you can punch me square in the dick.

Lazy writing, cliched characters, like notes instead of a novel, and yet it still pulled me in and kept me reading over 500 pages until the end.

I liked Frey's style of writing, and I liked learning more about the crazy city I live in. He did a nice job on some of the characters, and of describing Los Angeles.

This is a big book, but I read it quickly. The stories were great, fun facts about LA, and I really like the idea that you can be whoever you want to be. I was bummed about Dylan and Maddie (you'll just have to read to find out why!) but I was happy with Esperanza's ending!

This book is so boring and badly written I couldn't finish it. I loved Million Pieces and My Friend Leonard but this one was more than I could take. The facts about the history of LA were okay. You could ignore them if you wanted. The pages and pages about freeways was a bit much. And the way he did dialogue scenes with constant repetition of "speaks" made me want to go running and screaming or hit something.

    I was really disappointed.

4 or 5 good stories within the text of how LA developed. Wished he would have suck with the characters and stories and left out all the "fun facts" of LA. He seemed to go off on tangents and start other character stories with no resolution. Overall, I forgive him because I do love his writing style and loved A Million Broken Pieces. I think I will read My Friend Leonard.

I LOVED this book! The contrast in the characters will astonish you - and their individual lives and stories are both complex and gripping. I liked how Frey also wove historical and interesting facts about LA in between the story lines. You truly got a sense for the city both past and present. He is an amazing author and won me over again. Keep writing please, Mr. Frey!

Great slice of life book set in L.A. Intermixed with California History. Very interesting writing style and some unique characters.
