Cassie Madden has had a crush on Jefferson Ames since she was 12 years old and now shes working at his daughters school and has the arduous task of informing him of his aweful nannies and their incompitent behavior. She blurts out that she would be happy to take over the task and rid him of the troublesome nannies. She is still enthralled with hiim and falling in love with his daughter and father as well and they with her.
She is at odds with his new girlfriend possibly wife and is fighting a battle that she knows she cant win in the long run. When she ditches a ride on a boat with all of them then and the chance to spend time with them in fun she goes for a walk to the beach, the private beach of the infamous Althea Fairmont and she encounters Dana Craig Rogers wife whom she knows doesnt like her or at least she has always seemed unfriendly. They speak shortly and then they both hear what sounds like a gun shot and its coming from Ms. Fairmonts place. They go and investigate to find her passed out on her front porch. She seems to be fine and takes them inside to invite them to midmorning tea and a chat. A chat inwhich Cassie finds out lots about her neighbors and employer. This starts her to thinking about things and soon she finds her
befriended with the retired actress.
One thing leads to another and she finds she has the sympathy of Althea and even seeminly Dana. but
Althea sees that her new friend is getting no where in her situation and she soon takes the matter into her own hands.
After the last straw and Jeff still does not"get it" as it were she goes with Altheas help and begins to get a life of her own and gets into shape and begins to think about what to do with her life and decides that she would love to go into business. She uses this opportunity to reach out to her mother who is usually overbearing and is not disappointed but she recieves a package from Althea about a mystery weekend and is invited to this to act as Althea as it is a real tragedy that they are reinacting. Period clothes and all.
Jeff and she reunite and work through all their problems and solve the mystery at the same time and they find that they love each other but Jeff finds that he cant live with out her and eventually convinces her to marry him .
