Didn’t Like It“I read half and quit. This book was not up to her usual style. I have loved all the other books I read by her.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“A beautiful single mother who writes a controversial column for the Palm Beach Post, Charley Webb has spent years building an emotional wall against scathing critics, snooty neighbours and her disapproving family. But when she receives a letter from Jill Rohmer, a young woman serving time on Death Row for the murders of three small children, her wall slowly begins to crumble.
Joy Fielding writes an excellent suspense thriller and I always enjoy her books. The plot builds at an ever increasing pace to a strong finish and keeps one guessing right to the end.
Beneath the surface action is a more thought provoking theme which focuses on the effect the childhood environment has on a person and the different ways people cope with it.
Excerpt from book.
Jill.........We're products of our childhood. Everything we become springs from who we were as children, how we were treated, who and what shaped our ideas and values. We are who we are.
Jill sees herself as a victim and uses that mentality to justify what she did. She had no choice.......it's not her fault.
Charley........We may be shaped by our childhood but there is such a thing as choice. We are what we do.
Charley is successful and assumes she has overcome the influence of her dysfunctional family but she is to discover during her interaction with Jill that she has done this by creating a protective prison around herself..........now she must face the unresolved issues of the past.”

Although I found Charlotte (Charley) to be sometimes unsympathetic, she is vividly drawn and all too human. The never-married mother of two (with two different fathers) is a journalist searching for her own true voice. She is offered a once in a lifetime chance to work with a convicted serial killer to tell the true story of the horrific murders committed by this woman. Along the way, she attempts to keep her younger brother sober and reunite all the siblings (said brother plus two siblings) with their biological mother who left when Charley was 8 - for another continent and another woman.
The book is longish for the typical 'thriller' but only feels slow a few times and not for long. If you are looking for a book to while away the time at the beach or lake this summer, you could do worse than to pick this one.”
“excellent, keeps you glued to your seat.”

Charlotte aka Charley is a single mother of two and a newspaper writer who writes a popular but controversial weekly newspaper column. Charley doesn't have many friends and grew up in a dsyfunctional family. She receives a letter in the mail from convicted child killer Jill Rhomer and her life begins to change in unexpected ways. All of a sudden there is someone threatening her and her children and she doesn't have anyone to count on.
This was a quick and suspenseful read where I didn't see the ending coming. The question that was constantly in my head was was Jill really guilty and what kind of game was she playing with Charley? There were a lot of family issues with Charley's family and I was rooting for her the whole time. This was a great read and a new to me author which means I'm adding her other books to my TBR list.

“Exciting, suspensful, scary -- this Joy Fielding has it all. AND a kind of love story. AND child porn. AND psychopaths.
Read it. You'll like it.”
“This could be the best suspense-thriller that I have read all summer. It is a gripping story - couldn't put it down!”

Her children are targeted as possible victims of a predator. The storyline will keep you guessing right up to the last chapter.”
