Eh, one of the weaker Brunetti stories. He was downright unlikable in parts. The story was flat and not very interesting. Leon wrapped everything up in the last 20 pages and added one more murderer to her closet of ones-who-got-away-because-Italy's-full-of-corruption.

Truly gripping. This author never disappoints. Except that I wish there were more by her!

This story is disturbing on several levels. The lifestyle of the Rom (Gypsies) in Italy is revealed in the story of a dead young girl who probably was murdered during a robbery. Commissario Brunetti investigates her death and doesn't give up despite the roadblocks in his way. I love how Leon writes about his daily life in the course of performing his job... his lunches at home, his dealings with Vice Questore Patta, and the ever-so efficient Signorina Elletra

reminded me of our recent visit to Venice, slow pace
it's a casual paced read, not much in terms of chase or resolution
a bit about gypsies, not sure how real they are

I like the Commissario Brunetti books a lot, but must admit this one is very thin in the crime/mystery department. For lovers of the Brunetti family it is a good enough read, but if this were the first Brunetti book that I read, I doubt I would buy more from the series.

Donna Leon excels at settings and characters. This is another wonderful entry in the Guido Brunetti series.

I am loving this series by Donna Leon. Brunetti is a insightful, thoughtful hero -- and I especially love the descriptions of his domestic life with his family. I have found that I need an Italian-English dictionary to manage some of the vocabulary though!

For fans of Brunetti and Venice this doesn't disappoint with a subplot about the Zingari of the Veneto. I was transported as usual.

This is one of the best Brunetti's I've read. There is a lot of discussion about the church and religious belief. Guido is reading Greek drama and Paola is quoting Dickens and cooking fabulous meals. A lot of Prosecco and coffee is drunk. Patta goes to a conference. Then a body is found in one of the canals....
