Strigoi have started uniting with humans and attacking Moroi with new strategies because of which Moroi are afraid to unite with each other and celebrate Christmas and new year. So they are invited to the academy to be with their kids, and along with the royal families, there guardians are on the campus too. That's when Rose sees her mother for the first time in so many years, though their reunion can't be called pleasant. Rose also meets Christian's aunt Tasha, who happens to be Dimitri's good friend and a supporter of using Moroi magic offensively. On the other hand, Lissa is feeling a bit depressed again as she wants to use her magic but is unable to do so because of her medication and the risk of deep depression, and that has got both Rose and Lissa worried . Plus Rose is also a bit jealous because Lissa is spending a lot of time with Christian and not with her. Rose also keeps on getting stuck in Lissa's head because of the bond at the worst possible times, such as when Lissa and Christian are making out. Seeing that its not possible for her and Dimitri to be together, she decides to give Mason a shot . On Christmas along with nazar from her mother as a gift, she also gets the information that Tasha has asked Dimitri to be her guardian and that she is interested in him. Which just improves her mood sooo much. Not.

Later, they are taken to a resort along with their families for the holiday which would be protected with guardians and wards just like the academy. There, Rose meets Adrian Ivoshkov, another royal who seems interested in her and Lissa (for different reasons, though) and he has the ability to walk in her dreams. Later we discover that he is also spirit user and can also see auras, he tells her that hers is black and that Lissa's and his are golden. In the end he also comes to live with them in the academy to learn more about spirit with Lissa.

But before all of that happens, the news of another Strigoi attack comes: another one of the royal families has been attacked. But this time, someone is killed that Rose knew indirectly; it's Mia's mother.
A meeting is held, and Tasha publicly voices her opinion on Moroi magic and accusations begin, and of course the meeting ends without reaching any decision. Rose's jealousy worsens the things between her and Dimitri, and Adrian's interest in her also leads to some argument between them. But Dimitri regains his self control and tells her that he wants to treat her as adult and responsible, so he tells her the outcome of a private guardian meeting. They have found the place where Strigoi are hiding but they can't take any action as they haven't been given permission by the Moroi government. In her frustration and anger towards Dimitri, she tells this information to Mason who is eager to take on the Strigoi as soon as possible. She thinks that being with Mason would make her forget Dimitri but soon realizes that what she is doing is wrong and thus stops Mason from coming any closer. Tired of her rejections Mason leaves her alone.

Later that day she goes to a Moroi party with Lissa where after seeing her alone Adrian starts talking to her. Soon her mother appears beside her and yells at her that the dress she wore and talking with someone like Adrian would ruin her reputation. She stalks out of the party hall and walks to a balcony where Dimitri also comes after some time. They sit and talk which makes her realize that may be her mother is being overprotective because she might have had some bad experiences of her own in her life and not because she doesn’t trust her. She also realizes that she doesn’t want Dimitri and herself fighting or hating each other anymore, so she tells him that he should take the job as Tasha’s guardian as she wants him to be happy. She also decides to go to Mason and tell him that there could never be anything between them only to find out that he, Eddie, and Mia are nowhere in the resort. She guesses that they must have gone to Spokane, where the Strigoi were rumored to be, so she goes to Spokane with Christian to save them, hoping that they might have not already ran into Strigoi. She finally finds them, but while returning to the bus stop to go home, they are kidnapped by humans who work for Strigoi. After being trapped in a basement for a couple of days, she, along with some help from Christian, Mia, and Mason, manages to break free and also kill the two Strigoi. But victory doesn't always come without a price. Mason is killed protecting Rose, leaving her shattered.

Her mother supports when she needs her the most thereby forging a new bond between them. While getting her first Molnija marks for killing the Strigoi, Rose now understands that killing Strigoi is not as glamorous as she imagined and that it comes with a price, this time it was Mason’s death.

When they return to the academy, she confesses to Dimitri that she blames herself for Mason’s death. Dimitri tells her that though she made some wrong decisions, in the end it was Mason’s decision, therefore not Rose's fault at all. At that point she suddenly realizes that Mason got killed because he let his feelings for her come in way of his duty, that Dimitri was right when he said that they can’t be together because of their duty to protect Lissa. She turns to leave when Dimitri tells her that he has said no to Tasha’s proposal as it's impossible for him to be with anyone else other than Rose who understands him so much. They accept the fact that they can never be together but also agree that they cannot love anyone else . . .

  • “What's your name?" "What?" I asked, squinting at the light. "Your name." I recognized Dr. Olendzki peering over me. "You know my name." "I want you to tell me." "Rose. Rose Hathaway." "Do you know your birthday?" "Of course I do. Why are you asking me such stupid things? Did you lose my records?" Dr. Olendzki gave an exasperated sigh and walked off, taking the annoying light with her. "I think she's fine.”

  • “Not into older guys, huh?" asked Adrian once we were alone. "You're imagining things," I said. "Clearly, My stunning beauty has clouded your mind.”
    Adrian and Rose
  • “There's nothing worse than waiting and not knowing what'll happen to you. Your own imagination can be crueler than any captor.”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway
  • “That's pretty hot," he said. "Punching me in the eye?" "Well, no. Of course not. I meant the idea of getting rough with you is hot. I'm a big fan of full-contact sports." "I'm sure you are.”
    Adrian and Rose
  • “Sweat isn't a bad thing," he said, leaning his head against the wall thoughtfully. "Some of the best things in life happen while your sweating. Yeah, if you get too much of it and it gets old and stale, it turns pretty gross. But on a beautiful women? Intoxicating. If you could smell things like a Moroi does, you'd know what I'm talking about. Most people mess it all up and drown themselves in perfume. Perfume can be good . . . especially if you get one that goes with your chemistry. But you only need a hint. mix about 20 percent of that with 80 percent of your own perspiration . . . mmm." He tilted his head to the side and looked at me. "Dead sexy.”
    Adrian Ivashkov
  • “You know what would help?" I asked, not meeting his eyes. "Hmm?" "If you turned off this crap music and put on something that came out after the Berlin Wall went down." Dimitri laughed. "Your worst class is history, yet somehow, you know everything about Eastern Europe." "Hey, gotta have material for my jokes, Comrade." Still smiling, he turned the radio dial. To a country station. "Hey! This isn't what I had in mind," I exclaimed. I could tell he was on the verge of laughing again. "Pick. It's one or the other." I sighed. "Go back to the 1980s stuff."He flipped the dial, and I crossed my arms over my chest as some vaguely European-sounding band sang about how video had killed the radio star. I wished someone would kill this radio.”

  • “But I did die once. (I don't recommend it.)”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway
  • “You can't force love, I realized. It's there or it isn't. If it's not there, you've got to be able to admit it. If it is there, you've got to do whatever it takes to protect the ones you love.”
  • “I've heard a lot about you, Rose. Don't worry. It was all good." "No, it wasn't.”
    Tasha Ozera, Christian Ozera
  • “I think you smoke them so you have something to do while thinking up your next witty line." He choked on the smoke, caught between inhaling and laughing. "Rose Hathaway, I cant wait to see you again. If you're this charming while tired and annoyed and this gorgeous while bruised and in ski clothes, you must be devastating at your peak." "If by "devastating" you mean that you should fear for your life, the yeah. You're right." I jerked open the door. "Goodnight, Adrian." "I'll see you soon." "Not likely. I told you, I'm not into older guys." I walked into the lodge. As the door closed, I just barely heard him call behind me, "Sure, you aren't.”
    Rose and Adrian Ivashkov
  • “So...Mason, Eddie, and Mia went to Spokane to hunt Strigoi?" "Yes." "Holy shit. Why didn't you go with them? Seems like something you'd do. "I resisted the urge to smack him. "Because I'm not insane! But I'm going to go get them before they do something even stupider.”
    Christian Ozera and Rose
  • “When Love And Jealousy Collide On The Slopes, Winter Break Turns Deadly”
  • “The other problem in my life is Dimitri. He's the one who killed Natalie, and he's a total badass. He's also pretty good-looking. Okay--more then good-looking. He's hot--like, the kind of hot that makes you stop walking on the street and get hit by traffic.”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway
  • “Things die. But they don't always stay dead. Believe me, I know.”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway

Glossary edit see section history

  • Moroi: Vampires. These are born, not made. There are royal Moroi who lead the vampires. Though they do have heightened senses and ability to control limited magic, they are sensitive to the sunlight and are not known to be typically strong. They are protected by the dhampirs.
  • Dhampir: Half-human, half-vampire. Dhampirs get the better traits of the two races, better senses and endurance, plus tolerance to sunlight. Most train as guardians to protect the Moroi.
  • Strigoi: Evil, soulless vampires. These vampires are made. Whether the new Strigoi had been a dhampir, moroi, or even human, they can be turned by either 1) (Moroi) killing while feeding, or 2) exchanged blood with a Strigoi. Moroi blood is the most strengthening to them, so the dhampirs are forced to protect the Moroi against the Strigoi.
  • Molnija mark: Guardians get the molnija mark (Russian молния for lightning) tatooed on their necks to mark how many Strigoi they have killed. They look like two streaks of jagged lightning crossing in an X
