Picked this up 'on a lark'. Yes, it's from the latest vampire craze, but I very much liked the characters and the story was well written.

Didn’t Like It

ugh- didn't care for the heroine at all. Couldn't get into the author's style. Someone else wrote in their review that the author maybe thought about each word too much. I think that's about right. I tried to pinpoint why I didn't like but it read - or should I say, the heroine read juvenile to me.

This book kept me very engaged until the last 50 pages or so where I ended up going “huh?” and then feeling the last part was a little rushed.

This is one adventure with Luna Wilder. A werewolf who also happens to be a cop and have a family of witches (most of whom, she doesn't speak to). When women start turning up dead with half a finger missing, Luna is on the hunt and she isn't about to give up no matter what happens. Dmitri is a local pack leader and when his mate is one the murder girls, he refuses to back off Luna's case. He wants to find the murderer and show it what happens when a pack members dies. Together, they must solve the crime or Luna and all she holds dear may pay.

I really enjoyed the middle section of this book the most. It took me a bit to get into it as Luna had a tendency to do a few stupid things at the start but then I felt like she got better. Then the author decided that she needed throw in a horrible sex scene for who knows what reason! I would have been much happier with this book if it had never happened. I don't have a problem with a sex scene but it was so close to the end of the book, right when the main characters were suppose to be doing something to help save the city (and Luna's life), I couldn't understand why it was there at all. If it had been earlier in the book I would have been fine with it but it had such an awkward placement to me that it pulled out of the story. From there, the ending had too much happening in too short of time, causing it to feel rushed. I probably would have given this book four stars if not for those problems, because I really did enjoy the middle section and for the most part the beginning of this book. As it was, the last 1/3rd was a complete disappointment.

This was my first foray into Kittredge’s solo writing. (See my review of Black & White here.) She’s created a dark world that sinks its teeth in and doesn’t let go. Luna Wilder is an Insoli werewolf – a loner without a pack, the bottom rung of werewolf society. A police officer investigating a series of grizzly murders, Luna teams up with a hunky alpha to find the killer. I’m still trying to figure out whether the name Luna is supposed to be sarcastic, though. It seems like a too-appropriate name for a werewolf. Other than that, I loved the writing and I can’t wait to read more of Kittredge’s work!

I initially had a hard time liking Detective Luna Wilder, the heroine of this paranormal thriller. She is quite angry throughout most of the book, but she has her reasons. Luna is an Insoli werewolf, which means she does not belong to a pack, leaving her quite alone and vulnerable at times. Her character eventually grew on me though. I liked Luna's cousin / roommate, Sunny, a good witch who balances out Luna's darker side, and Dimitri, a werewolf pack leader who helps Luna solve a case. I found the storyline hard to follow at times, but it drew me in enough that I definitely wanted to finish the book to see how the case was solved, and how Luna and Dimitri's relationship evolved.

I liked the plot and Luna. What I didn't like is "hex it, hex you, hex ______" being in every other sentence. It was annoying and kept me from truly enjoying the book as much as I could have.

This book started out strong for me and I really wanted to love it but it just didn't happen. The overall story was good and for the most part I liked Luna. So I really can't pinpoint a reason why it didn't grab me. There were several editing errors that I think should have been easy to spot and correct. The male character had a lot of potential but nothing really happened. I'm still going to give Pure Blood a chance. Maybe I will love it.

Luna Wilder is a cop in Nocturne City. Not only is she fighting crime, but she has to fight her werewolf urges as well. She's a tough-as-nails kind of gal, and she definitely exerts her powers whenever needed. She is also known as an Insoli, a werewolf without a pack, after she was turned against her will. While she investigates a string of murders, she finds they are connected to another group of murders from decades past. This leads her into a world of black magic, demons, and a powerful pack leader, Dmitri Sandovsky, as a main suspect.

Night Life is decently written. I think the world is complex as well as the characters, mostly in the prejudices amongst the different species. You know, Humans are greater than Werewolves are greater than Insoli. Luna has a lot on her plate with worrying about her next change into wolf form, her sister Sunny who is a Castor Witch being a key player in her life and even the latest investigation, the local pack leader not trusting her, and even the police force not letting her get involved.

Sometimes I found Luna to be overly rude and just plain nasty to the other characters, although some were very deserving of it. There are definitely some hot scenes. Then there are some that have a lot of blood and ritualistic murders. Which I always enjoy, but other readers may not. Luna and Dmitri are an intriguing duo, although not always a happy one. I'm sure in future books they will feature prominently, and I can't wait to see what this relationship blossoms into. One thing I found to be kind of sloppy in the books were the investigations. Luna is an officer without a partner, which just doesn't happen. Especially in the case of brutal murders taking place in Nocturne City. Although, I'm sure even if she did have a partner she would run off on her own anyway. That's just the kind of girl she is.

I found Night Life to be an easy read, and hopefully this series will be a strong contender in the Urban Fantasy world.
