It all starts when Nick asks Norah to be his girlfriend for five minutes. He only needs five minutes to avoid his ex-girlfriend, who’s just walked in to his band’s show. With a new guy. And then, with one kiss, Nick and Norah are off on an adventure set against the backdrop of New York City —...
The story tells of teenagers Nick and Norah, who meet when Norah asks Nick to pretend to be her boyfriend for five minutes. Over the course of the night, together they try to find their favorite band's secret show and search for Norah's drunken best friend.
Norah Jones: Jewish, straight-edge teenage girl who is deferring her acceptance from Brown to take a gap year
Nick: Straight bassist in queercore band. Recently dumped by his girlfriend, Tris.
Caroline: Norah's best friend. Drunk throughout novel. She is great with getting guys, but is always protected by Norah, who prevents her from making stupid, drunken mistakes. There's a sense of jealousy between her and Norah.
“I am stumbling through the notes and Dev is onto the next verse and Thom is playing a little faster than he should, so I have to catch up as she (Tris) leans into this guy and rocks her head like I'm making this music for her, when if I could, I would take it all away and give her as much silence as she's given me pain.”
