The story tells of teenagers Nick and Norah, who meet when Norah asks Nick to pretend to be her boyfriend for five minutes. Over the course of the night, together they try to find their favorite band's secret show and search for Norah's drunken best friend.

  • Norah: Jewish, straight-edge teenage girl who is deferring her acceptance from Brown to take a gap year
  • Nick: Straight bassist in queercore band. Recently dumped by his girlfriend, Tris.
  • Caroline: Norah's best friend. Drunk throughout novel. She is great with getting guys, but is always protected by Norah, who prevents her from making stupid, drunken mistakes. There's a sense of jealousy between her and Norah.
  • Lou: Norah's godfather. Owner of a club that Nick's band plays at.
  • Toni: A drag queen. Norah's friend. Helps Norah and Nick out by letting them into a club.
  • Dev: Lead singer of Nick's "queercore" band.
  • Thom: Nick's bandmate who has only had an H in his name for the past two months
  • Scot: Nick's bandmate.
  • Tris: Cheating ex-girlfriend of Nick. Goes to school with Norah and Caroline. They aren't "not friends" but they aren't "not not friends" either.
  • Tal: Israeli boyfriend of Norah. They've gone through countless cycles of breakups and getting back together.
