The basic premise is that Marcus and his friends ditch school and head to downtown San Francisco to play an alternate reality game. In the midst of the game, terrorists attack the city, and Marcus and friends are picked up by the...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“A book about the danger of technology and how it can be used to take away people's rights without them even knowing about it. Very technical writing that is hard to understand if you are not very technologically savvy. I liked the main character, but questioned many of his decisions.”

I've never seen a book like this before. It is about a boy named Marcus Yallow who lives in a community that is constantly being watched by computers. Marcus is a computer genius that knows his ways around computers. One day as he is skipping school to play a game with his friends a terrorist attack turns Marcus' world upside-down as he is taken in for interrogation. The Department of Homeland Security suspects Marcus as the cause of the attacks and after giving up some of his passwords to his computer and cell phone they left him go. Now Marcus is set free and he starts a band of internet hackers, the X-netters. While Marcus be able to fend of the DHS or will they finish him?
From this book I would like to show a powerful scene in this book. After Marcus fights the DHS a bit they bring him back in for torture this time. He smells of vomit and sweat as they bring him. They place him on a table that feels cold and they strap him in. The women who first interrogated him now sits asking for his other passwords fearing this boy could destroy the DHS. Marcus refuses in fear. Then on page 345 the woman says," Give him a drink." Suddenly a small stream flows onto his face which soon turns into a torrent. Then a group of officers stepped in and arrested the lady. Marcus stares groggily as he realizes state troopers have arrived. The government had lost and he was saved.

The childish voice it was written in was irritating, but the technological aspects of the story drove me on.”
