Marcus, a.k.a “w1n5t0n,” is only seventeen years old, but he figures he already knows how the system works–and how to work the system. Smart, fast, and wise to the ways of the networked world, he has no trouble outwitting his high school’s intrusive but clumsy surveillance systems.

But his whole world changes when he and his friends find themselves caught in the aftermath of a major terrorist attack on San Francisco. In the wrong place at the wrong time, Marcus and his crew are apprehended by the Department of Homeland Security and whisked away to a secret prison where they’re mercilessly interrogated for days.

When the DHS finally releases them, Marcus discovers that his city has become a police state where every citizen is treated like a potential terrorist. He knows that no one will believe his story, which leaves him only one option: to take down the DHS himself.

I consider the work to be cyberpunk, though it easily qualifies as techno thriller as well. I'm sure it straddles more genres than I'm aware of.

As far as other works by Doctorow, he can be hit and miss, though I generally find even the misses to be at least somewhat enjoyable and worth finishing. He's got a few collections of short stories and some novels. I liked Eastern Standard Tribe and Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom for novels. For short stories, my two favorites are, hands down, 0wnz0red and The Rebranding of Billy Bailey.

You can read 0wnz0red online at Salon:

Many of Doctorow's books and stories are available for free download on his own site (what a guy!):

Really enjoyed book. I've read articles by Cory Doctorow before but this is my !st novel. I do have a few question though. Is Little Brother science fiction. Or can it be label techno thriller. The technology was very present day and accessible not futuristic like so many other works of SF. Please recommend other novels by Doctorow

I dropped $20 on the audiobook too and am switching between that and the ebook. It's sparked some great conversation in my (politically) blended family and am really enjoying the techno-babble, revolutionary themes, and the potential for subversion as a librarian serving Teens. It's definitely going into my library's collection.

Bar none, this is one of the best pieces of fiction I've read lately. Doctorow manages to teach, preach and tell a great story all at the same time. He's smart enough to write real characters and project them into a near-future where liberty is deemed a privilege not a right. Readers who love Tally Youngblood from Scott Westerfeld's "Uglies" series will find a new hero in Marcus Yallow - punk, revolutionary, outcast, savior.

Though Cory Doctorow is releasing this under a Creative Commons license as well as through commercial venues, ebooks just aren't my thing. So I put my $20 down and grabbed the audiobook.

I'm about 2.5 hours into an 11 hour listening experience, and this book ROCKS. Can't wait to finish it.
