Didn’t Like It“I was expecting more from this book. The content itself was fairly amusing, but the commentary by the author was generally awful. It's obvious that he thinks he's funny, but I'm not so sure there needs to be two pages of a fictional story about a one sentence ad from the 1940s.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“Another funny book of commentaries on absurdities by Lileks. This time, instead of hideous 1970's interior decorating or nauseating photos of weird foods the subject is "helpful" hints and tips on caring for your children. These pamphlets and articles were published back in the 40's and 50's and they're both hilarious and frightening in their sincerity and misinformation. Lileks does a pretty good job of mocking these little magazine horrors. I enjoyed this book but not as much as some of his other books like "The Gallery of Regrettable Food" and "Interior Desecrations". "Mommy Knows Worst" is funny but not as funny as those other two. Also, this book is in softcover and was never actually published in hardcover like Lileks other books, so that it has a slightly cheaper feel to it. Still, I'd recommend it for a few good laughs.”
