Lady Killer

by Lisa Scottoline

Mary DiNunzio is a trademark Lisa Scottoline heroine—she's strong, she's smart, and she's got plenty of attitude. In recent years, she's become a big-time business-getter at Rosato & Associates, but the last person she expects to walk into her office one morning—in mile-high stilettos—is super sexy Trish Gambone, her high school rival. Back then, while Mary was becoming... (read more)

Has the energy of Janet Evanovitch but not the silliness, which is a plus in my book.

Easy reading. A woman's book no heros only heroins.

A great page turner with crazy characters that are pretty life-like.

When an old enemy from high school, Trish, and her friends, come to Mary Denunzio for help with an abusive boyfriend who is also connected to the mob, Mary explains the law can do nothing about it. Within days, Trish has disappeared and her friends and family fear she's dead. Mary starts investigating and in the process angers many of her south Philadelphia clients and ultimately gets fired when hunting for Trish becomes more important than helping her boss, bennie, on a case. She finds Trish but not until after Bobbie, the abusive boyfriend, and we discover an old lover of Mary's, is killed. In this novel, Mary begins to develop more confidence in herself and stands up a bit more for herself but is still subject to worry that she isn't doing the "right" thing. She also starts dating Anthony, an Italian from the neighborhood.

I'm a fan of Lisa Scottoline and was not disappointed with this latest saga of Mary DiNunzio and her boss, Bennie. I liked the venacular play in the story lines and the view of the "mob". I did, however, figure out too soon the spoiler. I still enjoyed the books very much. Mary's family is priceless.

Did you know that Scottoline’s latest book, LADY KILLER, is twelfth Rosato and Associates Novel starring the character Mary DiNunzio? Where have I been? I feel like I woke from a coma, because this is the first I’ve heard of the author. To make matters worse, I still didn’t know it was part of a series until I began researching to post this on the blog. So if you were thinking you’ll need to go back and read the first book, please know I didn’t miss anything. Of course, I might have just awakened from a coma.

For those who might want to go back, here’s the order of the series:

    1. Everywhere That Mary Went
    2. Final Appeal
    3. Running from the Law
    4. Legal Tender
    5. Rough Justice
    6. Mistaken Identity
    7. Moment of Truth
    8. The Vendetta Defense
    9. Courting Trouble
    10. Dead Ringer
    11. Killer Smile

The book reminded me so much of Janet Evanovich's Plum series, but Scottoline has more of a mystery to her books where as Evanovich has more humor. But I think if you like one, you’ll like the other.

Although I plan to read more from this author, I don’t plan to go back and read all the books in this series. The reason has nothing to do with the author’s ability to entertain. I loved this book and give it a 5 check rating. I’m just not big on series and I have more going on than I’m comfortable with. I’m more partial to stand alone books. Of course when and if the thirteenth book in this series comes in, I’ll be in line for my copy. The writer has a remarkable gift of being able to lace words together on paper. Reading her book was like gliding on smooth glass. What an incredible experience!

It's good and I think the plot was a little more interesting than Daddy's Girl. Only one situation in the plot was a little far-fetched.

TITLE/AUTHOR: LADY KILLER by Lisa Scottoline
    RATING: 4.5/B+
    GENRE/PUB DATE/# OF PGS: Mystery/2008/491 LP pgs
SERIES/STAND ALONE: #12 in the Rosato & Associates series
    TIME/PLACE: Present/Philadelphia, PA
    CHARACTERS: Mary DiNunzio/attorney
FIRST LINES: Mary DiNunzio sat across from the old men, deciding which one to shoot first.

COMMENTS: Library book. It was good to be back w/ Mary and the gang. Mary is very busy helping folks from the old neighborhood and can't keep everyone happy. She gets an unexpected visit from "T"/Trish someone she went to HS w/ back in the day when they were the cool kids and she was the studious nerdish type. Now T is calling on her for protection, her boyfriend is abusing her but since he's connected to the MOB she doesn't know where to turn for help. T and her girls -- Giulia, Missy & Yolanda -- are a tight group. These three are very loud and active in their support for their friend Trish. Mary is putting so much efforts into helping T that she jeopardizes her position w/ Bennie. Fun read!
