Second in a series. Original voice in the genre. Life along the docks and the East End. Can't wait to read more from this author.

I really liked the plot and the characters are smart and witty. I might have liked the first one a little better but this was still very entertaining.

I liked this one better than Spymaster's Lady. Lots more spy stuff going on in this one.

Put in a little bit of spy work, a little bit of London underworld, a little bit of shipping and smuggling, a little bit of number crunching, a little bit of romance with a healthy dash of not the same old sex scenes, and you get an enjoyable, goes down easy story.. Now and again, the cheeky sharp as a tack gutter girl with the heart of gold characterization of the heroine gets annoying, but despite that you still root for her. Bourne's sex scenes are refreshing in that she tries for a new set of images and metaphors involving ships and sails and wind and waves, which sometimes wrecks but is much appreciated all the same.

Bourne has an energetic, funny voice, which alas makes the romance aspect more fun than filled with conflict and tension (which tends to be how I like it, personally). It's also the type of novel where the hero feels instance attraction for the heroine (*sigh*).

The novel suffers a bit from choppiness, and the plot has holes. I'd give it 2.5 stars.

Jess and Sebastian's story. Joanna Bourne is a terrific author! I read The Spymaster's Lady and was anxious to read this book, as well. They're both very strong characters and it was a joy to read about them. I, too, wish there had been more hot sex scenes. :) I'm looking forward to more of her books, and hope the next book will be Adrian's story.

I just love, love, loved this book! I have decided that Joanna Bourne is my new favorite author. I think the greatest thing about this book is the amount of depth the characters have. From Jess and Kenneth, to the secondary characters of Adrian and Doyle (who we saw in The Spymaster’s Lady) and a new character Lazareth the king of thieves Ms. Bourne breathes life into the story. Even Jess’s pet ferret, Kedger was a lovely addition.

Captain Kennett reminds me of a typical Linda Howard hero. Once he lays eyes on Jess and decides he wants her, nothing will stand in his way of getting what he wants. He just barrels his way into her good graces, knowing that he will make her his woman. He is very protective of those that he loves and will do anything he has to, to protect what is his, no matter how distasteful. He tows the line between good and bad. He is a good man, but he sometimes does bad things.

Jess was just as enjoyable. There are two sides to Jess. One side is very naïve, sweet and fragile and the other is very determined and stubborn. She is constantly jumping into risky situations without regard for the consequences. It’s a good thing for her that Kennett is so protective and is willing to go great lengths to get her out of these scrapes she keeps finding herself in.

I really enjoyed this story. My only complaint is that I wish there could have been more love scenes. I mean Kennett kept talking about how he was going to make her his, and yet he doesn’t until the very end of the story. Now, that I look back on it though, I find that is part of the charm of the story. I can’t wait to see what Bourne comes up with next. I really hope it involves Adrian.

The heroine is the daughter of a shipping merchant who's been arrested as a traitor. She knows he's not guilty, so she's trying to catch the man she believes is. But she's caught herself, instead, by someone trying to kill her. The hero, who is of course the man she suspects as the traitor, rescues her from the thugs, and they begin a dance of who-outwits-who, that brings in a cruel military spy, the king of thieves, who still believes he owns the heroine, British intelligence and--well, there's bound to be others. This has an incredibly intricate and fascinating plot, with strands that intertwine and tangle. The only thing I didn't absolutely love about this book was that I felt the heroine lost too many times. She was pushed into things she didn't want too many times, and though she was able to turn those to her advantage, it bothered me. Still, I liked the book a whole lot, and I'll certainly buy the next Joanna Bourne to come out.
