Having been raised in an orphanage, a young woman moves into the only occupation open to a person of "her kind", service to others. Seeking to better herself, she takes a place as second housemaid in a home in London. Both upstairs and down the house is as full of dark intrique as the skies of London are full of choking coal fire pollution.
