Olive lives in Crosby, Maine, where she taught grade school math and lived with her husband and son. The novel is actually thirteen stories in which Olive's life is revealed by those whose lives intersect with hers. Strout's characters are both dissatisfied with and disappointed by growing old. Age is particularly hard on her women. In spite of this grimness, there is joy in the simplicity of a life reduced to morning walks, comforting friends, and unsought romance. Powerful and painful.

This is a book of short stories relating to one woman, Olive Kitteridge. I liked a couple of the stories in the book, but overall was bored with Olive and her townsmen. I still haven't figured out what is so special about Olive and why one would choose to read about her.

I spent a lot of time attempting to stay interested and was disappointed at the end when I was never pulled in. Had I not gotten this as a review book I'm not sure that I would've finished.
