An eye-opening account of what it means to be trapped within the foster care system, and what it takes to survive.

Amazing how he was able to cope during his years in foster care. Just makes me mad how messed up the system is for those poor kids :(

This book was just ok for me. I thought it dragged on a bit and the author kept saying the same things over and over. I knew our country's foster care system had its problems but I did not know the extent until I read this book. The last few pages of the book gave some staggering statistics about foster kids. Two that stand out in my mind is only 3% of foster children get a college education and 50% are homeless within 2 years of becoming 18. I think God might open my heart to be a foster parents one day but right now I have my hands full!

Very insightful memoir of a boy trapped in a violent and abusive foster care system.

This is a "must read" for every adult on the planet! It's the startling account of the life of an innocent, young boy who finds himself in the foster care system due to the mental illness of his mother. Craving love and compassion, he received very little. It's a cry for volunteers to reach out as child advocates for these children so that they do not fall between the cracks merely because they exist; it's also a call for loving people to either care for or to adopt them so that they finally get the love they so desperately deserve.

So-so. A little whiny. Either it wasn't tragic enough or it wasn't that well written.

I found this book very touching. It was also very educational regarding the foster child situation. It is a book about love between a mother and her son that transcends poverty, mental illness, distance, etc. It is also a story about how a boy can rise above the odds to become a successful member of society.

Started out kind of slow, and in reality it doesn't have a ton of action, but a good story about a boy placed in Foster care for 11 years. The author seemed very honest, which sometimes I have issues with memoirs because their issues are sooooo out there I have a really hard time believing them. The parts that I did enjoy the best were the moments in which it showed that he was so alone and the trip ups he had along the way applying for college. Sometimes it is nice to read a story that you can actually believe is true.

3* Sad memoir of boy taken from neglegent, mentally ill mother & placed in loveless foster care system. Despite emotional scars, he somehow defies the odds, graduates from Harvard Law School & devotes career to children's rights.
