This was my first read of any in the Wolitzer family and while I was first taken aback at the sudden introduction of new characters, I began to enjoy this approach. It helped that I read it in the course of a couple of days; I didn't forget who was who. I enjoyed her descriptions and imagery as well as how she, from time to time, brings the children into the story. It's engaging - to be shown the "kid's point of view" and how the adult applies it to her own life. ”

I loved the concept but the characters are difficult to root for....I felt like I was treading water the whole time I was reading. Reading this type of book shouldn't be that much work!! Very disppointed.”

It took me more than half of it to have it keep my interest. I think the idea behind it was excellent; women taking time out of their lives to give their children a good foundation in life. Would I read it again - probably not. ”

I had high hopes for this book, and how it would reflect my own life. Though the lessons were good ones, the method of getting there was long and drawn out. The characters were bland and not deep enough to make you care. ”
