Douglas Preston (who normally writes mystery and suspense type books) and his family travel to Florence because he's ready to write a mystery based on a missing Renaissance painting (and by the way, the outline of that book sounds pretty good). So, being the good researcher that he is, hooks up...

I've read all that I will from this book. I saw a special on CNBC and thought the book would give me an inside view of Italy. However, I simply could not get into the book because I saw the documentary first and there is not much variation. So, see the documentary and save yourself the time of...

This was an interesting look at the Monster of Florence case, and even more interesting were the politics involved with the various Italian law enforcement agencies.

I thought it was ok - the overall story of a serial killer being on the loose for so long is interesting, but I felt the story dragged on a little too much.

This is an incredible read. I could never have believed such a corrupt and bumbling legal and criminal system could be alive and well in 20th and 21st Century Italy.A serial killer is still at large after decades so that the authorities can save face. It is 315 pages of abomination.I do not normally read True crime, but this is a must read! So many innocent people jailed and the killer is still free.Any evidence needed is created to prove the case of the offiicials.

I finished "The Monster of Florence" Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi. It was an ok but frustrating read. The police department in Perugia are so inept that reading this tragic story tends to make you think you are reading fiction with the Keystone Cops. They didn't secure crime scenes nor collect pertinent evidence, half the time they created their own evidence to imprison their new mastermind. There are many names thrown into the mix and no solution.

I heard on the news the other day about Amanda Knox, the American who is being tried in the same town of Perugia by the same judge who has been sued for his incompetency in the above book. I don't really know all the details of her story but if there is any question of evidence, I'd be trying for a new trial elsewhere! Her case is mentioned briefly in "The Monster of Florence" when Amanda's case first came to light in 2007.

Italy's own Jack the Ripper. This account tells quite a lot about the legal system in Florence.

Put together well. For a story that spans 4 decades, Preston and Spezi have put together the facts in an understandable order.
