Not one of Irving's best. Misses the satirical target by a wide mark. He is capable of much greater work than this half-baked tale.

I'm a big fan of John Irving, but I really despised this book. I read it during a long plane flight, and hoped to enjoy, it but I had to force myself to finish the book. This is one of those books that makes you argue with the text as you read it. I didn't care about any of the characters, the main plot line was ridiculous, the repetition of themes (that Irving reader will be familiar with from previous works) grew tiresome. The prose was uninteresting. This book was a chore to finish.

Another strange yet compelling book from the strange but compelling master.

This is classic John Irving... creates interesting characters with lots of oddball eccentricites. I read 'Owen Meany' and World According to Garp and think this is in that category. I'm not a big fan of dark comedy and if you are not into the depressing lonliness of the character, then I would skip this book, except I'm almost half way through it now. A much better book is 'A Confederacy of Dunces.'

This was a stupid book - really, someone else's hand falls in love with the same girl?

Off the mark. I couldn't get my mind around this book. Male author...I don't know, something just didn't work.
