Olus, the Akkan god of winds, loves mortals so much that he goes to Hyte and rents land from a girl named Kezi's parents. Soon after he moves in, Kezi saves her aunt, but in doing so, took an action that forced her to be sacrificed in one month to the Hyte god, Admat, because of an oath made by her father. Olus, the Akkan god of the winds, has fallen in love with her, though, and needs to save her. They meet at the market one day and run away, because Olus has a plan in mind. If Kezi becomes immortal like him, she will survive the sacrifice. To become immortal, Kezi and Olus have to undergo their own quests. Kezi has to go into Wadir, where people grow feathers and cannot leave, and pluck a feather from one of them. She stays there too long and grows feathers, though, and forgets about everything. After a while, she remembers and manages to leave, which no one else has done. Meanwhile, Olus, who fears confinement, has been attacked by bees. He is then tied up with spiderweb and dropped into a small well with one of his mortal friends. He has lost his powers with the wind along the way (because his winds cannot go underground) and cannot fly. He slowly gets himself and his friend out of the well only to discover that the friend was a vision. They both passed their quests, but Kezi still has time before her sacrifice and the pair decides to explore Akka. Finally, Olus and Kezi travel to the place where the gods live, Enshi Rock. To become a god or goddess, you must be able to drink therka, the drink of the gods. She cannot drink it after deciding on being the goddes on uncertainty, but when she says that she wants to be the goddess of awareness and uncertainty, she instantly becomes immortal. She still has to be sacrifice, though, for the sake of her family. The high priest stabs her, and then Olus carries her to Enshi Rock to be healed. After she is healed, Kezi and Olus get married and have mortal children because they have grown to love each other so much throughout their journey. The story ends by saying that Kezi never truly figured out whether or not Admat was real, but every year she looks for him.
