Rebus is being forced to retire at 60. This is his last week on the job. He blocks out his anxiety over the end of his career by throwing himself into his last case; the murder of a Russian poet. Is it his desire to end a personal score with his nemesis, Ger Cafferty or is he really involved with the crime? Rebus and Siobhan Clarke his successor in waiting, try to link visiting Russian businessmen and the poet's death. In the process two other people are attacked and Cafferty lies badly beaten in intensive care.
