This is one of my favorite mystery series, I’ve always enjoyed Victoria Thompson’s books. There are the regular characters, Sarah, Maeve, Catherine, Mrs. Ellsworth, Mrs. Decker, and of course Detective Frank Malloy. I love visiting old friends. And I’m happy that Dr. Brandt’s murder is finally resolved. And I’m also happy that Sarah’s father wasn’t involved, because for a while there, it could have been a possibility.

But unlike the others, where Sarah is always in the middle of things, meddling and getting attacked or hurt. She wasn’t in this one. In this one Malloy and Maeve take centre stage. I’m not complaining, just didn’t see it coming. I enjoyed it! It was fast paced, the story flowed without any awkward stops (sometimes you find a storyline just stops, and you wonder what the hay happened). The bonus of this book was that the romance between Malloy and Sarah seems to be blooming. Yeah!

I have read most of the books in the Gaslight series and enjoyed all of them. The characters are complex, deep, sometimes flawed, and human, the stories are strong, well-developed, sometimes disturbing, and compelling. The writing style is quite readable.

This last book appears to be a turning point in the series.

Solving Dr. Brandt's murder uncovers an evil legacy of abuse connects an insane young woman and a sad, frightened little girl, and leads to a horrible mistake. The killer's motives were completely under standable even though they were missplaced. So is his rage and frustration at the end of the book. (Apparently even though he hides his problematic daughter away, he still cares for her.)

While Sarah for the most part decides to sit out most of this story except for the climax to take care of her adopted daughter, a couple of new and interesting characters who I think may become regulars in upcoming books are added. And the teenaged girl from the slums turned nursemaid for Sarah's daughter, who has pretty much been a background character in previous books, really comes to her own in this book. Parts of her past life are revealed which help shape her sometimes flawed motives, actions, feelings, and personality as she takes an intrigal part in the iinvestigation.

Sarah's horror when discovering that her beloved, perfect husband might actually have had a sinister and evil side makes her character more human than ever. Frank becomes more human as well. Because he cares for Sarah, he tries to keep his investigation about Dr. Brandt's possible sins away from Sarah.

In conclusion, I believe that this is the best book so far in an already excellent series. Victoria Thompson ranks among my top three writers of historical fiction. (The other two authors are Anne Perry and Miriam Grace Monfredo.) I look forward to reading more in the future.

Fun read. Sergeant Malloy concludes his investigation into Sarah Brandt's husband's murder. Readers have been teased with tidbits in previous books and now the mystery is solved. Maeve has more of a prominent role, rather than being just taking care of Catherine. Mrs. Decker also makes a few more token appearances. I was kind of disappointed in the background role that Sarah seemed to have in the book, usually she is right in there solving the mystery. In this one, Malloy is actively solving the mystery and keeping Sarah updated. I was also disappointed that there was no interaction with Mr Decker and Sarah. Still, a nice read but not like it's predessors in the series.

Another fun novel in the gaslight series. Finally we get to read more about Frank and Sarah's blossoming relationship.
