I am not drawn to historical romance as a general rule, but a friend passed me this provocative love story. When The Romany stop on the grounds of the de warren estate, Ariella sees Vicount Emilian St. Xavier, half gypsy, in the camp and mistakes him for the leader of the group. She is unaware of his ownership of a nearby estate. She falls instantly in love. Ariella is a true bluestocking, enjoying the political and intellectual arena in London with her father's approval. They are an unusual, and tolerant upper class family, who are appauled by the bigotry and violence that erupts from the mere presense of the band. Thegypsies are there to inform Emilian that his mother was stoned by a mob in Edinburgh. She had sent him to live with his father when he was ten. Now all he think of is his guilt and the need for revenge. Ariella pursues him, and though they begin an affair, he constantly reminds her that he is only in it for the pleasure.

This book is a well-told story of the racism that exists for unknown or hated cultures and peoples. Ariella's mother was a Jew, and she is passionate about her defense of all people. She is determined to win St. Xavier's love and friendship. While she studies different cultures and believes she knows their experience, it is not until she travels with the band and experiences for herself the fear and violence that she truly understands their plight. A very good read.

I found this book to be highly sensual, but also that the story-line was a good one to follow along with, and maintain my intrigue. The character development of both Ariella and Emilian were strong, but almost at times, both seemed a bit too overbearing. However, they still seemed real, but just a bit too stubborn, zealous and in the case of Emilian too down on himself at a lot of times. It was a tangled and twisted web of uncertainty and the desperate need for self-discovery, love, and friendship. I guess it can be easily understood by so many who cannot fully find their place with a bi-racial heritage. So I can understand the struggles to find a place to belong, but perhaps it was a bit overdone???

Hero's the half-gypsy bastard legitimized son of an English nobleman who's faced prejudice his whole life. Heroine is the free-spirited daughter of an unusual family--she's very, very well traveled, and her parents don't care who she marries, as long as she's in love. And this gypsy guy--who they don't realize is the nobleman who owns a neighboring estate for half the book--isn't likely to love her back. They first meet him with a gypsy band and think he's their leader. The heroine is madly attracted--something she's never encountered before. The hero's madly attracted, but he's got a real self-esteem problem. It was a good read, but for some reason, I wasn't able to get into it too deeply. Not sure why.

I never read "ladies' romance novels" but I picked up this one by mistake. It follows the usual formula: independent heroine, brooding and troubled love interest, impossible relationship. Still, it was an easy read and something different for me.
