This is definitely the most successful comic I've ever read. Ostensibly a memoir, the story reflects Bechdel's process of attempting to understand her father's ambiguous suicide/accidental death, his hidden homosexuality, and the effects these had on their family. Simultaneously, she describes...

That this book won so many awards made me so very hopeful. It was not terrible, but this is not a book to which I would return. Bechdel certainly has a keenly objective vision, an ability to examine her past with clear sight that eludes the majority of us. However, structuring the narrative so...

Totally worth stealing from a library like I did, though I don't suggest it.

This was an interesting read for a number of reasons:
one - it was an autobiography. How many people write their autobiography in graphic novel form? brilliant idea.
two - the style in which it was drawn - gothic and cartoony with a sense of realism. what's also notable is how the drawings both compliment and enhance the story by either "going along" with the story or having an image that creates a thoughtful juxtaposition.
three - the content. no, it's not the same as "autobiography". anyone can write their life story, but not everyone can make it interesting, meaningful, or relateable to a variety of persons... perhaps my "relateable" is somewhat biased in that I, personally, can relate to portions of her story. However, the way in which she approaches certain topics, issues, times in her life - you don't feel scared or apprehensive reading the story.
Apparently some people weren't a fan of this book, I'm curious as to why. Was it that it wasn't a superhero? Nobody gets punched (kapow!), nobody wears their underoos on the outside, no deformities or MAJOR psychological disorders, it's a woman telling her story to both heal herself and help others in similar situations. I enjoyed it.

So far this is a 5 star book. It is about a young woman who goes through the trials and tribulations of growing up the daughter of a disturbed man. "Fun Home" is short for funeral home, which is the family business her father works at when she is a child. The girl also recounts her story of coming out as a lesbian. The author, Alison Bechdel, is a Vermont author.

The author looks back on growing up with a distant father who was obsessed with restoring the family's Victorian home. Her lesbian identity develops over the years but it isn't until she outs herself to her parents as a college student that she learns her father has been gay all along. The book is her way of reconciling the father she knew as a child with the man he turned out to have been.

Kind of like a traffic accident--you don't want to keep reading but you can't put it down. In the end you'll be glad you read the whole thing!

While tonally brilliant, and quite inspiring for me (as we read it as summer reading for my creative writing sequence, and i am thinking more and more i want to do that maybe), I think it lacked just a touch of... something. But I don't know what. So read it, and tell me.

Good story, enjoyed her extending the graphic novel into this memoir/autobiography genre.

Amazing book. Before I read this I thought that a graphic novel was Japanese anime. I didn't realize how one's life story could be told. And this story was so very odd. A true story of a girl whose father is a teacher and a mortician/funeral home director. He's got some issues, which impact the family greatly. But while you learn about those, you are privy to the author's journey into adulthood.
