One of the best books I have read in a long time for historical fiction - The author does a superb job of weaving historical details ( little ahha moments) throughtout and interestingly told from the grave...just a wow kind of book - I was told about it and I have told many....

The world is full of hope and promise to Agnes Shanklin at the turn of the 20th century. But the flu epidemic and World War take their toll. Agnes is the only member of her family to survive the flu. Since she has a small inheritance, she decides to travel to Egypt where her sister was a missionary. There she finds romance and intrigue as she meets powerful people such as Winston Chruchill and T.E. Lawrence as they create nations in the Middle East.

Although I preferred Mary Doria Russell's other books, this did the best job of explaining the background of current-day Middle-East conflicts of any book I've read - fiction OR non-fiction.

Read for my book club and liked the book alot. The writer meshes fiction with actual events and I thought did a masterful job.

A really good historical novel with lots of good info that I didn't know before and interesting characterizations of historical figures (I want to read more about TE Lawrence now!). But the strongest part of the book is the main character. I found her very real and likeable. I cared enough that I teared up several times as she tells the story of her life. The only negative was the ending, which was pretty weird, and seemed to not really flow with the rest of the book. But I did like her parting advice - "Read to children, [something else], and don't buy anything from a man who is selling fear."

This is the book that sparked my interest in T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), thank you, Mary Doria Russell!

The group really liked this one. We liked the author's depiction of historical figures as well as her use of fictional characters to form this very interesting story.

Excellent book to read when on a trip-reminds you of the things that made you want to travel to begin with. Interesting historical explanations for the some of the difficulties in the Middle East today

Why can't authors come up with a better ending? this book went off into a screwy scenario at the end that did not belong in this story. Up till that it was pretty good.
