I'm not sure how I feel about this book...there was a lot going on, and a lot to process. I'm giving it 3 stars for now, but there are things I didn't like about it, too.

a good story, and hilarious references to SF and Colma venues. The "guy" perspective on women and dating kinda annoyed me, but it goes away as the story unfolds.

This was a creative and entertaining book! The main character is a new police officer who is a little socially stunted, and is trying very hard to do his work by the book. While investigating an apparent accident in the local cemetery, he gets involved with a strange investigation that hints at the continued presence of the dead. The book is bizarre but sensitive, and not at all a horror story or zombie attack. I'm impressed with this as a first novel.

I'm downgrading this because of its misogynistic leaning...the female characters aren't simpathetic, except for Molly, but she is portrayed as being discouragingly marriage-minded.

And I'm not sure the main character really learns anything that he applies to his life.

Overall doesn't live up to the great premise. The ghosts are the best characters.

    Off to the used bookstore!

Smart writing and a good plot, although the ending felt a little slapped together.

This book is not what I expected. Thinking that it was going to be just another ghost story, it turned out to be a strong character study of a young rookie policeman dealing with some major life issues. I don't even think that the ghosts need to be a part of the story. They just add an unusual twist to the tale and provide a hook for the reader.
This would be a great book for teens because it deals with some of the tough (and poor) choices that adolescents make to fit in with their peers. Parents, however, will probably object to the excessive profanity and drug use depicted throughout the book. Both add gritty authenticity to the story. The drug use is very descriptive but is not glorified--the consequences are well detailed and could serve as a potent warning to a curious teen.

Colma, CA has 1200 living residents and 2 million residents already dead. "No one knows for sure what (the dead) do - if they do anything but lie mute, immobile, decaying - but some of the living have their suspicions."
So starts the story of Officer Michael Mercer, Colma Badge 13. Mercer feels that his life is heading in the right direction - a new job, a new girlfriend, and now hailed a local hero for saving the life of the teenaged son (Jude) of a famous film director. However, Colma's dead have also taken an interest in Mercer because, unlike most of Colma's other residents, he is able to both see and hear them.
After Mercer receives 4 boxes of questionable incident reports from the widow of Officer Featherstone, the man he replaced on the Colma police force, he begins to recognize his unusual link with the dead and realize this "communication" was something he had in common with Featherstone.
Mercer soon finds himself saddled not only with Jude's case to solve, but also the pursuit of "Doc" Barker and his gang of ghostly thugs who are harassing the deceased population of Colma. The real question is, if Mercer will be able to actually defeat "Doc" Barker or if he will suffer the same fate as his predecessor, Featherstone.
On the whole, Alive in Necropolis is a wonderfully entertaining read. The author does a fantastic job of bringing all of his characters fully to life - even when they're dead.
