This was a really nice, short, interesting book. I really liked it because it was very easy to get into. I like non-fiction books where I don't feel intimidated by scholarly wording, or scientific talk that I don't understand. This book was not so much about Shakespeare as it was about how little we truly know about him. It was also more of a collection of stories about the eccentric scholars who have studied and researched Shakespeare's life. I had yet to have a chance to read a Bill Bryson book even though they always come highly recommended to me, but I am definitely more inclined to pick up some of his other books now just based on how much I liked this little ditty.

I should have chosen a biography of someone we know just a little more about.

OK, I"ll admit it. I didn't really finish this book. I started it a year ago, and have been reading bits and pieces every since. It is full of enough historical data to be very interesting and is written in that fabulous Bill Bryson tone, but I just couldn't deal iwth it in large stretches. Don't know exactly why.

Easily the most informative and comprehensive of all the books on the life Shakespeare that I've read.

It's amazing how little we know about this guy. As usual, Bryson's investigations are fascinating, honest, and insightful.
