“(Inside cover) It is Jan, and park Ranger Anna Pigeon is sent to Isle Royale in Lake Superior to learn about managing and understanding wolves, as her home base of Rockyy Mts. NP might soon have its own pack of the magnificent, much-maligned animals. She's lodging in the island's bunkhouse with the famed wolf study team, along with two scientists from homeland Security, who are assessing the study with an eye to opening the park in the winters-an act that would effectively bring an end to the 50 year project so that the area can be manned to secure the scrap of border with Canada. Soon after Anna's arrival, the wolf packs under observation begin to behave in peculiar ways. Giant wolf prints are found, and Anna spies the form of a great wolf from a surveillance plane. The discovery of wolf scat containing alien DNA leads the group to believe that perhaps a wolf/dog hybrid has been introduced to the island. When a female member of the team is savaged, Anna is convinced she is being stalked, and what was once a beautiful, idyllic refuge becomes a place of unnatural occurrences and danger beyond the ordinary. Alone on an island without electricity or running water, with temps hovering around zero both day and night, Anna fights not only for the wolves but for her own survival as well.

It was an okay book. The writing was good. However, the rapes for so gruesome. Is saddistic the word I'm looking for? I'll only read another one of her books if it's selected in one of my book clubs.”

“This is one of Barr's best as Park Ranger, Anna Pigeon, is sent to Isle Royale in Lake Superior during winter to study wolves. Murder ensues, of course. ”

“Excellent psychological thriller in the claustrophobic winter environment of a small group of scientists studying wolves on the remote island of Isle Royal in Lake Superior. Park Ranger Anna Pigeon once again finds herself in a situation where her insights into the dark side of people and skills in survival are taxed to the max. A set of events points to the likelihood that a large aggressive wolf-dog hybrid has joined the wolf population and is responsible for the death of one of the female scientists. Anna's ingenuity in solving the mystery and the many harrowing situations she must surmount along the way makes for a very exciting and satisfying ride. Winter is a major character in the tale that adds to the pleasure of reading it in a situation of warm comfort.”

“370p Quick moving quick read. A 50 year old wolf study in Michigan is in jepordy of a funding cut and the winter study has begun. ”
