    Total Madness

Crooked Little Vein has very little pretense at plot - and only marginal attempts at character development. Still it nearly ranks amongst the must-reads as it is pure, cover-to-cover wacky madness.

Ellis is on a mad crusade to prove that he's got the sharpest teeth of all, and this book is excellent proof that he's capable of out-weirding anyone. Sure, as fiction, it reads like a collection of his occasional emails, but it is none the less gripping for it.

Highly recommended for fans of Chuck Palahniuk or Bret Easton Ellis, or just anyone that enjoys collecting tales of human weirdness.

Quick Read - No Lasting Impression

I picked this up cheap from a thrift store and was enthralled when I first started reading it. Ellis is a very expressive and funny writer, but beyond that he seems to struggle with such an evocative premise and as a result the book falls apart midway through and peters out at the end.

There are genuinely funny moments in the book, not to mention some interesting characters, but the characters sadly end up becoming caricatures of themselves.

It's a shame, really, as I expected so much more.

A treat for any Ellis fan

I wasn't so sure about getting this book because, for starters, I don't like detective novels. And as much as I loved Warren Ellis work in DV8 or Global Frequency, I was a bit afraid of disappointment.

Fear not. Crooked Little Vein is every page as amazing and pure Warren Ellis as it can get. In fact, the detective plot is simple and it serves more as a vehicle, driving you through a memorable series of philias, weird encounters in aeroplanes and discussions about the need (or lack of) for a politically correct world. Loved it to pieces and I hope we can get some more novels by Mr Ellis really soon.

    Fun and quick read.

After reading some of the reviews here I was expecting to be disappointed in this book. What I found instead is a perfect "popcorn" book. Just like some movies are best when you suspend logic, the same holds true for Crooked Little Vein. Being farfetched and a bit perverted makes this an enjoyable little book.

    Pure Win

You know that one friend you have who is always showing you things on the internet that you just can't unsee? You should buy him this book for his birthday.Modern graphic novelist and well-loved curmudgeon Warren Ellis, best known for his post-cyberpunk series Transmetropolitan, released his first prose novel Crooked Little Vein this summer to critical acclaim. Fans of edgy pulp novels and creepy-fetishes-we-like-to-think-exist-only-on-the-web will undoubtedly be lured into this tale with the rabid bite of perverse potential from page one as the protagonist, a delightfully gritty private detective, embarks on a journey through America's deviant underbelly on a mission from the government to reclaim a tome that will restore society's purity. The landscape of aberrant socio-sexual communities that unfurls before us as Ellis walks us through our culture's most alternative lifestyles leaves the right reader laughing out loud and frothing for more (and other more squeamish souls squirming under the covers). Warren Ellis can never be accused of not knowing his audience, and he had me eating out of the palm of his unwashed hand.
