Beauty is more than skin-deep…
Tattoo artist Raven Smith is blunt and hard, broken and jaded, dark and beautiful. While she doesn’t hide her painful past, she does keep a wall around her heart. She’s free sexually—but no one gets to the real Raven, beneath the prickly exterior.
With a voice like smoke, Jonah Warner is a smooth-talking, highly successful attorney, with a body that should never be hidden by a suit. He’s the kind of man who never takes no for an answer and always gets what he wants. And what he wants is Raven. She’s a survivor, and he finds that incredibly alluring.
Jonah gets under her skin in a way Raven’s never experienced. He makes her break all her rules—including her no monogamy rule.
But when a figure from Raven’s past shows up at the tattoo parlor and drops a bomb into her life, their relationship will face the ultimate challenge. Raven must finally come to terms with her past if she’s ever to have a future with Jonah.
Having been in the foster care system for most of her life during her early formative years, abandoned by a mother whose alcohol and drug abuse rendered her unfit to care for a child, Raven long ago vowed to live life on her own terms. As a longtime friend of the Brown's she has been on the outer periphery of their group of family and friends for years, it has only been in the last 3 that Raven found herself staying closer to Seattle to be around her honorary nephew and nieces as she has found nonjudgmental acceptance from these youngsters to be a balm to her soul.
This is the story that takes us deep into Raven's psyche, it shows us her painful past that has driven her to erect high walls around her heart and only let a select few get past her iron-willed defenses.
Jonah Warner is unlike any man she has ever met, he accepts her for who she is rather than be like others who never look past her occupation and body ink to the caring woman inside the beautiful face and body. Jonah quickly inserts himself into Raven's life, not only as a client but also someone she slowly learns to count on much to her own chagrin and surprise.
This is different than the rest of the series in the fact that it totally is all about the relationship between Raven and Jonah. There are scenes here and there with the Brown's and their extended group and also some very illuminating scenes with members of Jonah's family as well but still as others have pointed out it feels lacking in many ways due to the intense concentration on the couple but it also has a depth to it for the same reason that makes up for a lot.
It has been a long wait for fans of the Brown Siblings series but Raven finally becomes a solidly three dimensional main character after having been on the outside looking in for years, glad she found herself settling down but did not lose her adventurous spirit.
This is a nice wrap up to the adult generation of Brown siblings and their friends, if things pan out sounds like we have some more good reads ahead when the author has time to revisit with stories about the younger set that are rapidly expanding the family ranks!
