As the author of twenty bestselling books, John Grisham has set the standard for legal thrillers since the debut of The Firm in 1991. Enjoy this Q&A--as well as a personal note to Amazon readers--from John Grisham. 1. Your new novel starts off where most courtroom dramas end--with the verdict. Where did you get the idea to reverse the usual order of events this time around?
The actual trial is not a terribly significant part of the story. Most all of the action and intrigue begins after the trial is over, with the verdict and the subsequent appeal.

2. The Appeal overtly suggests that elected judges can be bought. If the novel is meant as a cautionary tale, what's next--the Presidential primaries?
Why not? Over one billion dollars will be spent next year in the Presidential primaries and general election. With that kind of money floating around, anything can be bought.

3. Speaking of electoral politics, you've been more vocal recently... see complete book description

I think it is interesting the way he has chosen to try and make a point with this book. I have no doubt that this probably does happen, which is very sad. Also interesting is that it came out at a time when voters would be reading the book and co-incide with the upcoming elections. The end was dissapointing, but I i think it was foreseeable in the way he pre-cursored it earlier in the book.

I like courtroom dramas and in this book depicts all the emotions of each character. Indeed John Grisham is a Titan!

at the time grisham's latest book was out on the market, i can't wait to have a copy and start reading...the first part of the book was kinda dragging though...but the latter part was simply nerve-racking!

however, i was greatly disappointed with the ending - the way carl trudeau got even richer despite Krane Chemical's deadly effect on people's health all over Cary County...=(

I completely agree... I absolutely LOVE Grisham, but this book did nothing for me. It was a real struggle to finish.

I haven't been able to get into it, and I am a huge John Grisham fan...but I do want to finish it, and then see what I think.

It really bothers me to think that the corporate world could be this corrupt. I have seen friends have to declare bankrupcy because people have enough money to "blow them out of court" with their more powerful lawyers. We've all witnessed what Enron did to some many people. This is hardly a fantasy.
