- John Dodge: A man who moves from town to town buying businesses and making them successful. He's a non-practicing therapist who puts his knowledge to good use on the lovely Julia Darrow who is trapped in Lambert Square.
- Julia Darrow: She's the owner of Cocoon, a bedding and sleepwear store. She's a widow who has become trapped in Lambert Square due to her phobia.
- Bean Hurt: She's 10, and she walks Julia's dogs. She pays attention to details and knows a lot about the people of Lamb's Corner. She's grown up with her mom and her grandmother.
- Mayme Hurt: Bean's mother and Julia's right hand woman. She helps Julia run Cocoon
- Link Kay: He's the resident pen expert. He works at Scrivener's the business which John Dodge has purchased. He doesn't like Dodge at first, but he eventually finds that he respects the man.
- Gloria, Boo, Scoot, Willie, Boo, and later Jimmy Dean: The dogs who play a major part of the story.
- Nils Sigridsson: The Swede who works for a company that is going to build a car factory in Lamb's Corner and provide jobs to the people there.
- Eleanor (Nora) Bugiardini: Dodge's sister and confidante who is also a therapist. Dodge calls her regularly.
- Maude: The mayor.
