An old man reflects on his life as he approaches his 90th birthday and in particular all the women with whom he sought pleasure. Did he make the right choice to pursue a solitary life or will memories of his melancholy whores lead him to realise that he lost the chance of true love and real happiness? Read the book and find out ....

I took this as another great works of my favorite magic-realist author, Gabriel. Wow, first name basis, already? hehehe...Maybe it's because I already feel close to this person through his writings, I've read quite a number of his works now. Memories...is a sensual, intricately detailed, and post mid-life crisis, andropausal tendencies of an old man who had seen a lot in his times. Gabriel created the hunger in me..hunger to really delve what's the old man is going through...A surprising short novel..

Gabriel Garcia Marquez has written a story about an octogenarian man who discovers the meaning of true love on his 90th birthday. The man, who is nameless, reflects over his life and his relationships with women.

I didn't hate the book and I didn't love it either. It was written well and some of the internal dialog of the protagonist were thought provoking. One of his ideas that I liked was "I could not avoid a mental comparison to the one taken when I was thirty, and once again I confirmed with horror that one ages more and with more intensity in pictures than in reality." After reading the story, I had no emotional connection to it. The only emotion I felt (at first) was towards the age difference of the protagonist and his "birthday present" to himself. But after you strip the ages and names, it just becomes an unconventional love story. I'm glad I read it and will read more titles by this author.

Li no original...ao natural. Gostei, o amor vale em qualquer idade, desde que o preconceito não exista! nem na casa das meninas:)

While it is definitely not García Marquez's best novel it is still a worthy quick read. It's the story of an old man who falls in love with a constantly asleep young prostitute... The subject matter is weird and only the Nobel Prize himself could make such an interesting story from such odd material.

Marquez borrowed some lines he already used in "Love in the Time of Cholera" in this book. It's a real quick read that it feels almost like you're reading a short story. I'd say it's a cross between Lolita and Love in the Time of Cholera with more emphasis on old age. That's the part that I really enjoyed reading, his descriptions of growing old and continuing to live; the details were fantastic.

A journalist who has spent all his life alone, without any wife or child, once again finds love in the night of his 90th birthday, a love that overturns his life, the love of a 14 years old virgin.
This novel is the description of the old man's year of agony and love. It can easily be classified as one of Marquez's greatest works, competing with Love In The Time Of Cholera.

I am an avid fan of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. He is an excellent writer in all aspects. This story is not his best work. The pursuit of whores seems a bit overplayed. It just read like a dirty old man to me. And it is a pity, because I pre-ordered this book. I love his writing still.
