Diversity Works 557 books / 823 members / 8649 posts "The most ignorant and hurtful idea of all, of course, is that the entire topic of race and genes and intelligence is off-limits to all right-thinking, compassionate people, just on principle. What's wrong with this, you idiot, is that it's premised on the assupmtion that some races are innately and immutably much less intelligent than others--which, I hate to break it to you, is demonstrably false."
Bruno Maddox in his essay Blinded by Science in Discover magazine, March, 2008

Diversity Works is a where we acknowledge our differences, celebrate our commonalities, and make an honest effort to navigate between the two. We hope the setting here feels safe enough for you to examine, consider, and challenge ideas and thoughts expressed here. It's not about being right, but being heard.

Tell us what you think.

50 Book Challenge! 4690 books / 4690 members / 31146 posts Welcome to the 50-Book Challenge! We are not listless. In fact, we love lists ...

A list of the books we've been looking forward to, for example, can be found by following this link:

http://astore.amazon.com/allencotrip-20

Our challenge is to read 50 books in one year. OR ... establish a goal for yourself more or less, it's up to you, just because we say 50 books doesn't mean that has to be your goal too.

To join, all you need to do is start a thread, WITH YOUR NAME IN THE SUBJECT OF YOUR ORIGINAL POST, and log your books (with title and author, please.) Reviews are always welcome as well. It is a very good idea to bookmark your post (when in your post, add it to your internet browser's favorites)for quick access for future updates. Things move quickly around here.

If you haven't been keeping track of the books you've read, start when you join.

I enjoy reading your lists, and my TBR pile has grown as a result and I've read books I wouldn't have otherwise (The Hunger Games, I'm talking to you ...)

It doesn't have to be all lists all the time, though ... People enjoy it when you comment on their lists as well, so when you update your list ... take a minute and browse around. You never know what you might find. (Water For Elephants, I'm talking to you.)

I survey the group each year starting in mid-December, until about mid-January then compile the lists and post the results. I look forward to this year's lists, now that the Twilight fervor has died down.

Thanks for being here and have fun. If you have any suggestions or questions, feel free to contact me.

Polyamory 101 books / 270 members / 113 posts Unfortunately, thanks to trollers, we've had to make this group "private", so you must be a member to see the shelf and discussion list. We regret that certain individuals have to disrupt our pleasant online experiences.

Books about polyamory, polygamy, non-monogamous relationships, open relationships, open marriage, non-traditional relationships. Books can be fictional stories that feature main characters or supporting characters in any non traditional relationship structure, or they can be non-fictional books about the subject of multiple partnerships.

We can also discuss more general relationship-building books that help us address things like jealousy and communication, which are the two biggest issues in polyamorous relationships (and all relationships, really).

If you have read any of the books we have already covered, but you joined late or it is past the due date, you can still add to the discussion! Let us know your thoughts on any of the threads, the discussions remain open!

This group is for discussing poly-themed literature only. It is not a pick-up site. Please do not make any posts requesting personal information or contact information from our members or asking to be their newest partner. This is not appropriate. Anyone making these kinds of posts will receive only 1 warning. A second infraction will result in removal from the group. If two people happen to develop a mutual desire to take their correspondence away from the group, that's fine, but the purpose of this group is *not* to hit on its members and unsolicited or non-mutual come-ons are offensive. Not everyone here is poly or actively looking for more partners.

There are plenty of matchmaking sites out there. We recommend www.polymatchmaker.com and www.okcupid.com if you want to meet other polyamorists. You do not have to be polyamorous to participate in the group. We are here to discuss books.

If you need more information about what polyamory is, please visit:

Nobel Prize in Literature 93 books / 568 members / 274 posts For a complete list of Nobel Prize Literature Laureates, please click on "visit our website"

Dedicated to reading authors who have won the Nobel Prize in Literature. Who are you reading now, and what do you think of these movers and shakers in the world of literature?

From www.nobel.org:
The medal of the Swedish Academy represents a young man sitting under a laurel tree who, enchanted, listens to and writes down the song of the Muse.

The inscription reads:

Inventas vitam juvat excoluisse per artes

loosely translated "And they who bettered life on earth by their newly found mastery."
(Word for word: Inventions enhance life which is beautified through art.)

The words are taken from Vergilius Aeneid, the 6th song, verse 663;

Lo, God-loved poets, men who spake things worthy Phoebus' heart;
and they who bettered life on earth by new-found mastery

The name of the Leaureate is engraved on the plate below the figures, and the text "ACAD. SUEC." stands for the the Swedish Academy.

The Nobel Prize Medal for Literature was designed by Erik Lindberg.

Magical Realism 19 books / 5 members / 18 posts Magical Realism Literature is where the fantastical, the elaborate exaggeration meets reality without taking off onto a pure fantasy. According to Gabriel Garcia Marquez "it is usually characterized by elements of the fantastic woven into the story with a deadpan sense of presentation." It is commonly found in Latin American literature by authors such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Paulo Coelho, and Isabel Allende.
