This is an excellent book, very vividly imagined. Well worth the read (and the Commonwealth Writers prize that it won).

A fabulous and sobering historical novel about slavery in American and how the British engaged slaves during the Revolution to work for them, promising freedom and land in Canada. Needless to say, that didn't work out very well. The story is told by a woman survivor of the ordeal who ended up as the face of slavery for the English slave abolitionists, leading to the end of English slave trade. A must read!

I loved following the trail of an African born slave, across the Pacific, sale of her in SC and travels to NYC and back home again. It was an eye opener to all the terrible sagas and events of slaves from 1750's - 1800.
