neva read nething before this..am sure no one would write something like this like this again...funny in a very funny kinda way.
This book is best epitomized by Marvin's quote "Life, Dont talk to me about Life". Its a book that will leave a smile on your face long after you've finished reading it. This book, although it talks about Aliens, I think is a funny look at way organizations are built on on Earth- whether its the Bureaucratic Vogons or the Marketing strategies of Sirus Cybernetics. This book leaves you laughing even on your most disappointed day. It gives you a funny spin on everything. Worth a read- or ten :)
I'm with you, jessedyer -- Douglas Adams is one of my main sourced for quotes too. A five books of the "trilogy" are addictive -- so is Dirk Gently.
The oddball, the one and only, hitchhicker's guide...my favorites:
*The Big Bang is just a touristic attraction
*The Infinite Improbability Drive
*Marvin_android paranoid (sarcastic like me, unfortunate like me)

The best book that I've read. I have read it about 42 times :) Generally I just pick up the book and open it to some page and start reading, and am guaranteed to laugh within the first minute!!
Okay, here's a question.
In Life, the universe and everything(When they materialize at the Lord's cricket ground) Arthur claims his bag and towel kept changing. Also he finds (I-DON'T-REMEMBER-WHAT) in his bag which he lost a long while ago in an airport.
But there's no explanation of all this anywhere else in the book or in the later books.
Any guesses?
i vaguely remember what you're talkin about.
i'll reread it when i get home, but i remember he had some virgin olive oil (lol) in there? and a postcard.
I think Mr. Adams had a flair for the random. I understand the lost luggage showing up there was a vent to his own Airline luggage issues, but the contents, if I had to guess, had to be him sitting there thinking, "What would be wierd to find in your bag?"
Didn't he also find a ball which wound up being a bomb, and when he tried to bowl it, realized it was a bomb causing him to fall but to forget to hit the ground and thus began flying?...
Nothing random about that. ;)
God's final message to his creation:
'We apologize for the inconvenience'
Pure genius. Puts down exactly what you think about life in as much words. Never knew it could be that simple.
Its such a good book unfortunately anyone says hitchhiker in our house and there is almost certainly a book quote to follow ;)
Don't doors always say "Pleased to be of Service" or give satisfied groans. ?
Great book, not comparable to other books. Guaranteed laugh, at least when it's your type of humour ;-)
For starters: start with The Restaurant at the End of the Universe. If (for some unbelievable reason) you don't like or understand that one, then don't even try the other books.
:D FORTY TWOOOOOOO!!!! OMG I cant believe that dolphins are smarter than us. And.... mice. :D
I own the giant one, but am still wading through book three . . . Rowr. Poor Marvin. Though, he's not really dead. If you look far enough . . . He's been here until the end of time O.O
Sorry for the inconvienence.
This book is one of the most excellent pieces of writing I have discovered in all my years. Its unique brand of humor and its memorable characters are just some of what makes this series so dramatically superior to the majority of the things I have read. I can suggest to anyone who enjoys British humor with immense enthusiasm. Share and enjoy!
Does anyone else have the leather bound 1987 Longmeadow Press edition with the printing error on the spine? Mine lists the first two books as "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe" and "The Restaurant at the End of the Galaxy".
"Im a pretty dangerous man when cornered" Yeah, you go to peices so fast people get hit by the shrapnel" XD
I absolutely love this series and I just started reading it again. I'm just wondering though what the difference is between The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and The More Than Complete Hitchhiker's Guide? They both have the exact same books in the collection and are both described as being unabridged. The only difference I could see in the descriptions is that apparently the Ultimate one seems to have nearly 200 pages more than the other one. I realize page counts are relative and that they can vary due to book dimensions and the size of the print, but I find it hard to believe that those factors could account for nearly 200 pages.
So if anyone happens to know what the actual difference is between these two versions I'd appreciate it if you could satisfy my curiosity.
