I'm on the fence about this book. It jumped around between characters and past and present too much. The final chapter solved the puzzle but unlike a well written mystery this book just left me with more questions. What is the real story?? Maybe I wouldn't feel so ripped off if the author had...

This book held my interest throughout until the ending, which was a disappointing finish to such a good story. Definitely worth the read, though.

I really wanted to like this, but wound up abandoning it halfway through. Too confusing, way too many characters, an unreliable narrator, and shifts in points of view made this a tough read for me. I started this on audio, got through about 150+ pages that way, but switched to the print version to see if that would work better. Alas ... it did not.

Color me confused since I ended the book knowing the barest of details. I liked the writing style but I still don't really know for certain who was related to who and what the plot was.

Pretty good. Too many stories in one. Not enough about lace making. Can find no historical record of 'reading lace.'

The book starts slow but get extremely interesting leaving you with an ending that was completely unexpected and fantastic. I highly recommend this book.

The story of Towner Whitney goes in spurts and sputters along a fine line between sanity and insanity, taking one step forward and two back. It is purposeful in its inconsistencies, lies, and puzzles. Towner and her sister, Lindley are joined forever as the bond of twins is concrete, unbreakable, and mysterious. Towner is confused about her mother May and her standoffishness and has been lovingly cared for by her great Aunt Eva. Eva, as all the Whitney women are, is a lace reader, reading a person's life history from the patterns of lace. Towner escaped Salem and fled to California when events, including love-lost, suicide, physical abuse, and sexual abuse are too much for her to handle. She does not want to see what the lace holds for her future. But return she must, when Eva disappears under mysterious circumstances...Towner is jolted back into mental illness, fighting for her life, and lace reading.
A very unique and mesmerizing novel of truth and lies, love and abuse, and schizophrenia and sanity.
