In Nachttrein naar Lissabon leidt Pascal Mercier zijn hoofdpersoon en de lezer naar de fundamentele vragen van het menselijk bestaan. Kunnen wij zelf de loop van ons leven bepalen, en wat zou er gebeuren als we het mochten overdoen? Wat betekent het een ander mens werkelijk te kennen? En is het eigenlijk wel mogelijk onszelf te kennen?
De personages in deze prachtige roman komen zo tot leven dat de lezer ze bijna hoort praten en kan aanraken. In hun zoeken en twijfelen, in hun moed en volharding zijn ze ontroerend, en aan het einde van het verhaal is het alsof de lezer ze persoonlijk heeft ontmoet.

In deze diep-filosofische roman breekt een Zwitserse leraar radicaal met zijn leven. Door een toevallige ontmoeting op straat laat hij alles voor wat het is. Hij stuit op een boek over een overleden Portugese arts en raakt volledig in de ban van diens overrompelende en diepzinnige gedachten. Hij neemt de nachttrein naar Lissabon, spoort nabestaanden en vrienden van de auteur op en probeert diens leven te ontraadselen. Langzaam ontplooit zich een panorama, waarin het verzet tegen de dictator Salazar een grote rol speelt. De buitengewoon getalenteerde en zelfbewuste arts vraagt zich voortdurend af, wat waar en echt is en of het waard is ervoor te leven. Hierdoor wordt de Zwitserse leraar -en niet minder de lezer- geconfronteerd met de laatste levensvragen en met zichzelf. Al lezende ontkomt men er niet aan, antwoorden te willen krijgen of geven. Een adembenemende en magistrale roman, die dwingt tot zelfreflectie. De prachtige vertaling is een klein meesterwerk en draagt veel bij tot het leesgenot.”

I only read in the bath in the evening and the sign of a good book is when I don't notice the water has gone cold - with this one I am getting out while the water is still hot! I will persist and maybe I will get into it!!”

“fabulous book - I love foreign authors, and the descriptions of Portugal and Germany were fascinating. Plus, it's very philosophical in nature, with a dash of mystery thrown in. Loved it!”
