First in the Australian series. His writing is superb. Too bad the books are hard to find in the US. This is the story of English prisoners shipped to Australian penal colonies. Historically accurate.

Part one of a trilogy covering the early years of Australian settlement right through to the end of WW1. Courtenay's characters spring to life and their stories grip you. In the third book the descriptions of the battles at Gallipoli are heartwrenching.

I read this book about a year after it was published in Australia and was greatly entertained by the tale of Ikey Solomon and Mary Abacus and their journey as convicts from London to Australia. It was atmospheric and descriptive and I remember loving the characterisation of the protagonists. However, when I went back to it about five years later, I was unable to get past the first 50 pages or so, the dialogue and so much more about it just seemed so incredibly cheesy. Either I had turned a reading corner or the book had simply not stood the test of time which is unlikely, what with it being a period piece. Anyway, I gave it three stars for the pleasure it gave me from reading it firs time around.
