- Ryan Walsh: Narrator, is 15 (a freshman) when story starts but was 10 when her too-die-for Cubs (Chicago major league baseball team) fan died in a tragic white-water rafting accident. Her father's death changed her from a promising pre-teen to a heaving, strugling teenager.
- Nick Crowley: The new kid at Ryan's high school. He is in Ryan's third hour math class. He meets Ryan at Wrigley Field when both of them skipped school on opening day. They start talking about the Cubs and a friendship starts.
