“I resisted reading this book for months because of all the hype, but I just finished it, and it really is a great story. Certainly indulgent at times, the memoir is redeemed by excellent, descriptive writing and a fascinating concept: 3 months of decadent eating in Italy (charmingly delicious), a 3 month stay in India at an ashram (sometimes a little too much navel-gazing), and a rather puzzling 3 months in Indonesia (Bali). Overall, the book works wonderfully. Few writers can pull this off, but Gilbert does so. Recommended.”
