wow this was an amazing book. I could relate to the character in so many ways. I have further recommended this book to four other people. All have stated they enjoyed it as much as I did. It's a great read you must get it for yourself.

Didn’t Like It

I am largely disappointed with this book, especially given all the hype surrounding it. The self talk that is detailed ad noseum throughout the first half of the book is truly painful. And her redefinition of religion to be simply whatever makes one happy is flippantly dismissive of 5000+ years...

I'm wavering between "didn't like it" and "liked it". I liked large chunks of it, but was thoroughly over it about two thirds of the way through and just didn't end up liking the main voice at all or any of the decisions she made toward the end. I thought she was whiny and self-indulgent. I did like lots of it, though. Just definitely not all of it!

The author, Liz, goes on a year long quest to find peace of mind. She tries pleasure in Italy, which works quite well. Then she tries an Ashram in India which with hard work on her part also brings her closer to her ultimate truth. Lastly she returns to a Hindu healer as he had predicted she would and finds a peace and happiness she can take back to her 'real' life.

This book shows the magical story about finding happiness, inner peace, pleasure and love It's for anyone who believes that there is another, a better way to survive this life. And the most important lesson I learned from it: Just sit and smile! Smile even with your liver! :)

I saw the movie and then decided to read the book. There were parts of the book I loved (namely learning about her travels and some of the people she met) but there were also places where I felt like she was wallowing in self-pity and it got a bit cumbersome to read. At those places I just skimmed over, but in general I enjoyed the book. It was a nice "beach read."

Kind of a biography with a good story to it.

its a great book. somewhere when i was reading this, i felt like i was reading my own journal. sometimes felt like the author was talking to me, showing me a way, some path, teaching me something, directly taking to me. really loved it.

I've wanted to do similar things for some time and this book is providing both inspiration and practical answers for how to pull it off.

I don't understand all the hoopla about this book. Granted I did find some of the spiritual insights interesting enough to write down, but I just kept getting bogged down by the fact that I didn't find the author very likable. I got really tired of the whining and complaining of a spoiled, entitled American traveling all over the world "finding herself." If I had her relatively unlimited resources and a year off work to do nothing but travel to exotic locales, I could probably come up with one or two nuggets of fortune cookie spirituality to share with the world. I had two false starts with this book before I finally forced myself to finish the darn thing. And when I was done all I could really think was, "Whew! Glad that's over."
