Writing Readers 748 books / 3968 members / 5706 posts If you're an aspiring or successful writer, this is the group for you. Suggest your favorite books on the craft, discuss past and present challenges, and share some nurture with a growing community of other online-savvy, "writing readers". Welcome!

Note: If you want to promote a book or writing website on which you publish, please use the "Shameless Self-Promotion" discussion thread. In order to keep this from becoming a chaotic open bazaar of single-shot marketing, we are deleting book notices, reviews, etc. from other threads and directing all authors to the "Shameless Self-Promotion" thread. Thank you for understanding.

Travel Narratives 203 books / 173 members / 140 posts Books that help you see the world through another's eyes. These memoirs recount the cross-cultural differences that travelers overcome as they meet people and see places that others dream about (or that others haven't even considered visiting). Wanderlust lovers and armchair travelers unite. (Not for guidebooks!)
Audible Books to recommend 542 books / 273 members / 1195 posts I thought it would be nice to have a list of books that people have read that are on audible (downloads from Audible.com & library CDs are my choices). I've created quite a wish list, making sure that it is listing books that can be listened to -- otherwise, no point in thinking about it. We are so lucky to have such an incredible selection of books to listen to now -- it's a whole new world and just in 5 years! I used to read 3 books a year if I was lucky -- now it's more like 30 books now that I can listen -- I love it!!

When members write down the books they have read -- give at lease a two word critique, even if as simple as the star system -- it's more helpful to see that than the list of books one plans to read. Also, mentioning the book name in Comments allows the reader to see what you are referring to when reading from iPhone!
PDX Book Club 46 books / 19 members / 13 posts This is the official 'group' site for my book club. The club is a cross-genre one in which we try to read a little bit of everything. Some years we tackle a theme, other years we're more ecletic in our selections.

JANUARY's BOOK:
Smilla's Sense of Snow by Peter Hoeg.

DESCRIPTION:
The title of this quiet, absorbing suspense novel by a Danish author only suggests the intriguing story it tells. After young Isaiah Christiansen falls from a snow-covered roof in present-day Copenhagen, something about his lone rooftop tracks--and the fact that the boy had a fear of heights--obsesses Smilla Qaavigaaq Jaspersen, a woman who had befriended him. Smilla is 37, unmarried, and, like Isaiah, part of Denmark's small Eskimo/Greenlander community. She is also a minor Danish authority on the properties and classification of ice. Her search for what had frightened the boy leads her to uncover information about his father's mysterious death on a secret expedition to Greenland, a mission funded by a powerful Danish corporation involved in a strange conspiracy stretching back to WW II. As related in Smilla's sober, no-nonsense narration, the plot acquires credibility even as its details become more bizarre.

"WTF?" 139 books / 865 members / 2659 posts Ever started reading a book that everyone else seems to love and you just don't get the attraction? Or picked up a book from an author you usually love and wondered if the latest offering was written while talking on the phone? Or perhaps you read the first three chapters of a book and still can't figure out what's going on, who the characters are, the basic plot, or even the purpose of the book at all? What happens when all your friends recommended this great book that you thought was the most poorly written waste of perfectly good trees you ever read?

Welcome! You have found a place to vent your frustrations, discuss your opinions, review justifying arguments, or generally get satisfaction for time wasted on reading a book that just left you asking...WTF????
50 Book Challenge! 4687 books / 4689 members / 31130 posts Welcome to the 50-Book Challenge! We are not listless. In fact, we love lists ...

A list of the books we've been looking forward to, for example, can be found by following this link:

http://astore.amazon.com/allencotrip-20

Our challenge is to read 50 books in one year. OR ... establish a goal for yourself more or less, it's up to you, just because we say 50 books doesn't mean that has to be your goal too.

To join, all you need to do is start a thread, WITH YOUR NAME IN THE SUBJECT OF YOUR ORIGINAL POST, and log your books (with title and author, please.) Reviews are always welcome as well. It is a very good idea to bookmark your post (when in your post, add it to your internet browser's favorites)for quick access for future updates. Things move quickly around here.

If you haven't been keeping track of the books you've read, start when you join.

I enjoy reading your lists, and my TBR pile has grown as a result and I've read books I wouldn't have otherwise (The Hunger Games, I'm talking to you ...)

It doesn't have to be all lists all the time, though ... People enjoy it when you comment on their lists as well, so when you update your list ... take a minute and browse around. You never know what you might find. (Water For Elephants, I'm talking to you.)

I survey the group each year starting in mid-December, until about mid-January then compile the lists and post the results. I look forward to this year's lists, now that the Twilight fervor has died down.

Thanks for being here and have fun. If you have any suggestions or questions, feel free to contact me.
NNBR - Not Necessarily Book Related 103 books / 562 members / 14473 posts Oh, come on! we need a place to just chat here, whether or not it's about books.

Religion, politics, recipes, games, restaurant reviews, dinner ideas, WWYD questions, tech recommendations, and whatever else you can think of or want to discuss.

Bitching and moaning are allowed. Bullying, trolling and scams are not.. This forum is not an appropriate place for authors to promote their books (but we'd LOVE to chat with you!) The management thanks you in advance for your cooperation.

A Note about Deleting Posts:
I don't generally delete threads, mostly because I'm pretty much against censorship (unless it becomes a mean, knock down drag out, name calling fight) but also because I believe that it is important to know where the idiots are, so to speak. If I deleted every obnoxious post, new folks would join the group and have no idea that that Person X had a habit of spouting all this nonsense. I think that if you're going to act like an idiot, your stuff should be left up so that everyone can see you for what you are. Forewarned is forearmed, IMO.

"In the case of good books, the point is not how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you.", Mortimer Adler

*This is a group for book lovers who prefer to take an under-promise and over-deliver approach to their reading. It's also for those of us who quake at the thought of "committing" to read 50 books in a twelve month period.

The challenge: Set a goal for yourself to read and enjoy 2 books each month.(If 1 would be a s-t-r-e-t-c-h goal for you, that's great too! If you crave more than 2, go for it. It's your challenge :-)

If you have been keeping track of all that you've read since January 2008, feel free to include those books towards your goal. If you haven't been keeping track, simply begin now.

How it works: Put your name in the subject line of a new post, and start to add your book list. From that point on you can add to your list by replying to the first post in your thread. If you prefer to keep your thread free of others' questions or comments then you may want to include this request in your original post title (e.g. "No comments please"). If you would like questions or comments within your thread, why not include "Comments welcome" in the title? If you feel inspired to write mini-reviews or comments on any book in your list, please do. Whatever feels right for you!

The group shelf:You are also invited to add your 24 + books to the group shelf. If you did write a comment or review please also add this to your book on the shelf. In an effort to keep things simple, we're only using the "Books We've Read" shelf.

Please drop us a note if you have any questions or suggestions for improving the group. We'd love to hear from you!

This group is for those who are looking to grow and say Hi! to the little Buddha within themselves and also who believe in good "KARMA"

So come on, get off your chairs and simply join my family and help me in nursing Mother Nature and spreading "UNIVERSAL PEACE"!

There is something very important one must know!
By joining this group pls donot think that you are being forced to accept another religion...You are who you are and be proud of it but learning about new stuff isn't tht bad, its not just the teachings tht matter but the place itself! People who like travelling should really try to come over to dharamshala not because of the Dalai Lama only but to see what Buddhism is really about.. Its more like going on a journey to discover hidden facts!!

Travelers’ Club 29 books / 223 members / 3180 posts This group is about entertainment and fun related to everyday experiences; specially what we dream of or gather from travel and exploration. This group is impartial about race, religion, political party and gender. We are here for Global harmony, peace and friendship. We welcome those who love mother nature, new adventure, roaming- traveling- hiking- treking-camping, exploring and last, but not the least, dreaming. This club gives a scope for pleasure through reading together and interacting on new and beautiful places, people, their culture and heritage.
This club is not an arena for argument and intellectual wrestling. It is a simple, entertaining voyage made by 'friends-in a boat' in search for New Horizons.
This club was created by Mitraa on Feb'08 as the first administrator and eventually, four more administrators joined the group.

We like members who are more than their book shelves, degrees and rigid personal opinions; who are ready to introduce themselves and share with others with transparency. It is not principal, it is our desire. Let us be together and have journeys together.

What is BookMooch? from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BookMooch
BookMooch is an international, on-line book exchange community founded by John Buckman in July 2006. Membership is open to anyone and is free. BookMooch allows its users to exchange books using a points system. Members earn points by adding books to their inventories, by sending books to other members, and by providing feedback when they receive books. The points earned can then be used to “mooch” books from other members. All books “cost” the same number of points, with a multiple point surcharge for international mooches. Members may opt to send books only within their own country, worldwide, or worldwide upon request.

Come on, where's your sense of commitment!? : )

For most people, what is so painful about reading is that you read something and you don't have anybody to share it with.
In part what the book club opens up is that people can read a book and then have someone else to talk about it with. Then they see that a book can lead to the pleasure of conversation, that the solitary act of reading can actually be a part of the path to communion and community.”

Because of the nature of our conversations, if you are a girl (under the age of 18), please get parental consent prior to joining.

RULES:

NO religious debates. Take that up in a forum that is designed for religious debates. Refer to only your religious beliefs in that they help form your opinion. Do not speak of the tenants of a faith that is not yours.

No personal attacks. Do not use a member's name or any pronouns referring to a member with ANY derogatory comment, such as, naive, sexist, stupid, immature, etc.. Do not use any descriptions that demean a person's character, intelligence or belief's

Do censor your own comments prior to submission to ensure that they are respectful of the other members in the group.

Do pause before submitting in a heated discussion and take a second look at what you are about to submit.

Recommendations:
Be specific and don't use generalizations. When debating, be sure to counter specific points made and address the member who made the point.

Give people the benefit of doubt. This is the Internet therefore you don't have the vantage point of reading body language.

Ask for clarification. Ask questions. We could avoid a lot of hurt feelings if we first ask if a person is saying what we think they are saying.

State your position without expectation. The goal is to be heard and share your position. We're not here to win converts.

If you do feel attacked, address the offender directly and let them know that what they said (and be specific) hurt, upset, concerned you. And communicate this without countering with an insult. It's hard to listen when you're feeling attacked.

When stating statistics provide cite (web link, article, book).
