“I didn't like the book at first but then I reread it and got a new appreciation for it. It was funny, inspiring, and insightful. A bit philosophical in some places but overall a very good book.”
“I have to agree that i was disappointed in the book. It came highly recommended by a couple of people; perhaps that got my expectations too high. And while i could relate to different aspects of her journey i kind of missed the point, perhaps, of it. I found it neither inspiring nor deep. I would have to agree with Drury that it is simply overrated.”
“I haven't read all of the responses about this book, but I can certainly say I enjoyed the book immensely. I actually had it on my MP3 player and listened to it on a long car trip. This book isn't strictly about excitement, and new places, it is a long personal journey that we who chose to go, went on. Most of us can find something in our lives that reminded us of a certain part in the book, and for those who couldn't see themselves, you are either very very lucky or horribly oblivious to life. Spiritual journeys tend to be more hard work, than fun and excitement, and not every day, is good, emotions come up and we can either talk about them or ignore them. Just my 2 cents and my opinions, not to dismiss anyone else's. Oh yeah, "Groceries" was on Oprah again last week, and they are making a movie of this book. Julia Roberts is playing Elizabeth Gilbert.”
“I'm just curious: what were you expecting to happen during the Pray section? Were you anticipating a spiritual journey where the author learned to meditate and become closer to god? Were you expecting an inner struggle and an honest portrayal of what happens at an ashram in India? Or were you expecting "Pray" to be something more exciting? Something with a bit more entertaining appeal--say someone gets killed in the ashram and God comes down and speaks with a wagging finger and explains the purpose of life--would that have been less boring for you? ”
“Does anybody think this book is as overrated as I do? I'm pretty stunned it's gotten any attention at all.”
““The first part of this book "eat" was really entertaining. "Pray" was pretty boring. "Love" pulled it back together again. I guess I read this book with the idea of hope and balance coming into play. Although Elizabeth Gilbert found hope and balance, I'm not sure how many of her inspirations I can apply to my own life”
“Entertaining way to spend some "free time," getting over divorce, etc. Not enough sex.”
“Amusing in a best seller sort of way. Not very enlightening. Too much sex.”
“I'm reading.”
“I loved the book but it bothered me that she only hit an equilibrium at the end after she'd found her love. That was a turn-off.”
