Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia

by Elizabeth Gilbert

This beautifully written, heartfelt memoir touched a nerve among both readers and reviewers. Elizabeth Gilbert tells how she made the difficult choice to leave behind all the trappings of modern American success (marriage, house in the country, career) and find, instead, what she truly wanted from life. Setting out for a year to study three different aspects of her nature amid three... (more)

wow this was an amazing book. I could relate to the character in so many ways. I have further recommended this book to four other people. All have stated they enjoyed it as much as I did. It's a great read you must get it for yourself.

I am largely disappointed with this book, especially given all the hype surrounding it. The self talk that is detailed ad noseum throughout the first half of the book is truly painful. And her redefinition of religion to be simply whatever makes one happy is flippantly dismissive of 5000+ years of contemplative religious scholarship and reflection, which seems shallow and a bit arrogant. Not to mention her having no problem meditating on herself despite being in a country where some of the...

Is it just me or do people either get this book or not? Its 5 star or low star, and the complaints I see leveled is that its 'too whiney' or 'too self-obsessed'. In my opinion, this book is a perfect example of introspective self exploration, with the courage and drive, which only coming from the bottom of the barrel can do, to carve out a new existence, one that matches her insides to her outsides.

I'm just going to throw it out there, that people who don't DO introspection, or question things, and try to get to the root of things, are the ones that didn't GET this book. To them it was written in another language. Any thoughts?

the book seems to be very individual in terms of its perception. for those who can truly identify themselves with the heroine, it feels so life-like. apart of the overall theme, there are some particular tiny things that i feel i've been or am in her shoes. it struck me to read the description of Venice in Part I, - i was reading it and thinking absolutely the same about Jerusalem, where i've lived and ran from. anyway, i'm still in the middle, but in my opinion the book is really good. oh, and the way she describes food is so poetic and evokes some appetite!

i guess to each is own. there are many aspects of the book that all of us can relate to (being divorced, finding love, meditation, culture shock). i was able to relate to how she gets depressed about the things that didn't go well in her life. and was good to know that there is a away from keeoing sane w/o going to a shrink. i have also been trying to follow the indonesean spirirtualist advised to meditate w/ even your kidney smiling, and it works for me!
