Cassie and her family live in Mississippi in the middle of the Great Depression. Her brother's ex-friend, T.J. is going on trial, for a crime he claims to have not committed. This is rare for a black boy in the south. Meanwhile, Cassie's big brother, Stacey, is growing up and changing before her eyes. Her family is also having financial problems. Cotton, the main crop that they grow is not worth as much as it used to be. Cassie's biracial cousin, Suzella comes to visit and Cassie is very jealous. Throughout the story, racism and struggles, threaten to tear the family apart, but the Logans, are determined to "let the circle be unbroken".

  • Luke Hammond ( Uncle Hammer): Uncle Hammer is David Logan's older brother who lives in Chicago and comes down every Christmas and sometimes more often to see the Family. He is a bit hot-headed because is you insult him he gets angry and quickly and wrecklessly does something to help. He has a big build and is a very respectible man
