My initial expectation when I began reading was that it was going to be a difficult and heavy book. My father (who is a great reader) hadn't made it through so I took precautions. Rather than reading it by myself (I was only twelve) I read it with my older sister so she was able to explain things to me and remind me who people were, etc. So I was pleased at how well I was able to follow the story and I really enjoyed it.

My question to those who have read The Silmarillion: What was your initial expectation when you began reading?

I think that expectations are INCREDIBLY important to satisfaction with a book (or movie, meal, etc.), and anyone who cracked this one open expecting The Hobbit would be sorely disappointed. What do you wish you had known before you began reading that would have helped you appreciate it more?

This was a hard book to read. While all his novels (as with most fantasy novels) have new words for everything, at least there is a story running through. This book was disjointed.
